There are different types of donuts. Cake donuts are like cake, hence the name. Cake donuts have more fat in the batter than cake does.

There are the yeast raised donuts that are more of a heavy bread type of dough.

There are also things such as crullers which are more of a pastry dough.

All donuts are deep-fried.

When a donut is prepared without yeast it is called a cake donut. Yes, it is by all means a donut. In hot weather they are best served plain, while still warm with an iced mocha. In the autumn they're traditionally served plain with a freshly pressed glass of apple cider from your local orchard.

This is a great traditional recipe from the Divine Recipe web site. The coating is optional, as I have mentioned before but you may want to shake up a few. For variation add 1 cup of fresh blueberries to the donut batter (wild are best as they are smaller if you are lucky enough to find them) when in season. The crunch of a homemade cake donut when fried just right may permanently sway you away from any chain made donut!

Old Fashioned Cake Donuts

3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
4 tsp.baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 ground nutmeg
2 tb.vegetable shortening
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
Vegetable or canola oil for frying
Granulated sugar, powdered sugar or cinnamon and sugar for garnish

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and nutmeg. Set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer, cream the shortening and sugar together on medium speed until well blended; add the eggs and vanilla and beat until well mixed.
Alternately stir in the flour mixture with buttermilk to the creamed mixture, stirring only until just mixed. Cover and refrigerate dough for at least 1 hour or overnight.
Preheat oil in a deep-fat fryer or deep cooking pot to 375*F (190*C).
On a lightly floured work surface, roll dough to about 3/8-inch-thick. Cut out donuts using a floured donut cutter.
Fry donuts until underside is golden brown, turn and brown the other side. Lift donuts out using a slotted spoon and drain on paper toweling.
Put granulated sugar, powdered sugar, or cinnamon and sugar into a paper bag. Place warm donuts in bag and shake to coat well.
Makes about 36 donuts.

What's "like" proof? Cake doughnuts are made from a better resembling a thicker cake batter, hence the name. They have the same types of leavening agents.

Raised doughnuts have yeast as the leavening agent, which regular cakes do not have. Raised doughnuts (a.k.a. yeast doughnuts) are made from a traditional yeast dough, not a batter, and require rising time.

In some cultures, any small sweet flour-and-sugar product is called a "cake." For those people, doughnuts of either type definitely come under the definition of "cakes."

yes and no-there are two types of donuts, cake and yeast.

Cake donuts are heavy and filling, yeast are lighter with fewer calories but they are all bad for diets, LOL

go to your local dunkin donuts or krispy kreme and they can give you your proof-buy one of each type of donut LOL

i hope this helps
