The story of the ark depends on the biologically indefensible idea that "fish are fish".

I.e. that the result of the rains on the rising oceans produced a salinity in which all aquatic creatures can live. (And plants too ... both aquatic and terrestrial ... but let's not go there.)

Never mind the fact that most fish can only survive in a very narrow salinity range ... that's science ... and what do scientists know about fish anyway.

Noah didn't put any animals or fish on the ark. God did. Since there are still freshwater fish, obviously God let them live. God wasn't killing fish, just really bad, bad people. All the animals he wanted saved were saved. You don't have to have the details to get it.

Did he have a place on the ark for birds to sleep?

where'd he keep the termites?

did he bring cockroaches too? or did they sneak on the ark?

He didn't have to. The flood changed the face of the earth. These changes made various aquatic species adapt to new enviorments. Before that...they were all in the water.

Oh man, don't go down that road. Trust me.

If you start dwelling on the outright absurdities of the flood story, you'll give yourself a migraine.

The rain that fell was not salt water. It probably diluted it enough for all of the salt and fresh water animal to both survive.
