Hi. One of the professions I am hoping for when I grow up is to be a surgeon. However, of course, to be a surgeon, you need to steady hands.

Are there any exercises/drills I can to do make my hands more steady?

Thanks in advance.

i used to play the piano and dance this crazy traditional dance where i had to balance lit candles on the back of my hands, and i currently sew...i don't know if this contributed anything to my "steady hands" when i do surgeries.

instead of getting a gun permit...you can do the opposite of what the other person suggested and get yourself a handheld video camera and video things w/o the stabilizer on--that way you can gage how your hand-steadying improves over time.

(FYI: my microscopes controls look like a nintendo controller. even down to the color scheme)

As a surgeon told me once, very few people have natural innate ability to be a surgeon...the vast majority it is a learned skill.

Experience, confidence and practice will make your hands rock steady. So if you have shaky hands now, have no fear it will be trained out of you.

Something that you can do is to become ambidextrous...this can be aided by playing a musical instrument.

Also, video games are a great way to gain skills for laproscopic/arthroscopic surgery, many studies have shown that surgeons who were video gamers score higher in surgical skills test.

Hand Exercises For Surgeons

You don't neccessarily need to have exceptionally steady hands to be a surgeon. You learn to work with the hands you have. I personally find that coffee makes my tremors more prominent and my hands don't work as well as normal for a day or two after lifting heavy weights. That being said there are many great surgeons with fairly pronounced tremors.

If it is not caused by any other medical condition or disease, then you have such condition called "essential tremor".It usually gets worse when you use your hands to do something, such as picking up a small object, or if you try to maintain a certain position.
Learn exercises to promote more stability in your hands and wrists which involves the use of 1- to 2-pound weights strapped to your wrists. For example lifting your hands up for a certain period and various hands and wrists position which you think could help stabilize your unsteady hands. You can do these exercises at home. ou also need to rest well and learn how to relax. Stress tends to make tremors worse, and a relaxed state often improves them. You could not definitely eliminate all stress from your life, but you can change your reaction to stressful situations using a range of relaxation techniques. Deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery and massage as well as disciplines such as yoga and tai chi. Physical exercise such as walking, jogging, swimming or biking are also a great stress reliever.
You reminded me of a classmate who was always scolded and shouted at during our affiliation practice especially when at the Operating Room, the way her hands shaked was pretty obvious despite of claiming that she was not nervous at all. To our surprise few years after we graduated, we heard she got a job as an OR nurse in a prestigious hospital, and as we are told she no longer had "shaky" hands.
You see, you might need to figure out yourself if there are things that can make you stressed unconsciously, which needs proper way of handling them not to result on having unsteady hands.
Anyway, avoid too much coffee, strong tea and cold pills. If it is quite a concern you may see a doctor who may prescribe a drug such as a beta-blocker or primidone.

Goodluck!

Do NOT drink booze, lift weights, do drugs, drink coffee, sell junk bonds, act like a crook, use marked cards, obtain neg AM loans from YAHOO dirt bags, or have a mother-in-law! Oy vey! nm

PS, I shoot all sorts of firearms and they give me the booboojeebees after a few hundred rounds. Don't expect them to help you without a good padded vest. I still need to purchase one.

Get your firearms certificate, buy a gun and go to a shooting range. The concentration you need to hit the bullseye will help, a lot.
