This is just another example of people in authority going mad. You can not legislate common sense. Anytime the law makers try to solve a problem they either make the problem worse or create 3 more problems they could not visualize before then.

Wow, Seattle evidently does not have enough problems on their hands at the moment. What about the problems with transit? Can't we at least focus on something else more meaningful than microwave popcorn. Oh and btw, San Francisco banned plastic bags. At least they had good reasons for the ban like that the bags are hard to recycle and cause environmental problems.

Yes, you can politely ask your boss if they would institute this ban since you personally can't stand the smell, but he's under no legal obligation to do so. Btw, maybe you should go see a doctor about your weak constitution if the smell of microwave popcorn is enough to keep you from working. I mean imagine if you ever have to face a REAL problem..you might be unprepared.

My mom was griping about this the other day... low-fat popcorn is a great diet food! She works at the DOT, and she seems to think at her office the rule WOULD work. I agree though - too much interference.
Edit: Whoa... I just read the other responses. Is this seriously how folks elsewhere think of Seattle? Man, I thought we were just the rainy city!

It is about the cost of fire alarms and evacuations due to burning popcorn.
By the way, Seattle is considering banning plastic bags as well. (They already fine you if you don't recycle).

I'll tell you what - I dare all here to take a little test!!!!!!
Really overcook some popcorn - I mean let it go just like you forgot about it for a few extra minutes. Its pretty easy to do.
I experienced it once and I couldn't believe it. A friend smoked us out of a condo for over an hour while fans tried to clear the air. The stench was really bad.
Come on people who are complaining - I double dog dare ya!!!

Helps to get the story straight. The city sent a memo to employees asking them to be more careful and not allow microwave popcorn to burn because there had been too many incidents where fire alarms went off. If voluntary efforts didn't make a difference, that they would consider forbidding it at work.

I'm not surprised, coming from the People's Republic of Seattle. The same place with lots and lots of suicides.

Sure, because the government isn't involved in enough things. What else can we ban? Fried foods? The color red?
Communism, aggressive government, and oppression worked really well for the Soviet Union, didn't it?
