If man were made in the image of god, why do we need to be altered?

Everybody is doing a great job of answering the 1st two questions, but seem to be ignoring the last one: "If man were made in the image of god, why do we need to be altered?" Thanks!

"What's god's infatuation with circumcision?"
I don't know, but the bible was written by man. It would be my belief that God does not have an infatuation with God.

"Why do so many religions depend on circumcised penises?"
Contrary to popular belief, they don't.
Judaism does.

Islam does not:
"Our Lord, You did not create all this in vain" (3:191), and "[He] perfected everything He created" (32:7).

Christianity does not:
Acts 15:24: "... we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, 'You must be circumcised and keep the law' -- to whom we gave no such commandment ..."

Gal. 5:6: "For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love."

Gal. 6:15: "For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation."

Galatians 5:2 forbids it, saying "Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing."

"If man were made in the image of god, why do we need to be altered?"
Very true, we don't. Circumcision is a horrible procedure with many side effects. I can't understand how the law permits the parents to choose whether or not the child gets to keep part of his genitals instead of the child himself. And yet the law is completely different for girls.

feel one should not be allowed to cut parts off of someone's body without their informed consent, be it the mother or the father irrelevant of their intentions. It is an irreversible process. How will the child view your decision when he grows up? See this video: http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=137650&fr=ybr_sbc

It's perpetuated by culture, just as FGM in other areas and the majority of people who force it on their children do not know the true facts.

It should be the choice of the victim as to whether or not they want to undergo the procedure. There are many men who try to undo the damage done to them every year: http://www.norm.org/
It is wrong to force an irreversible process onto them that they may not undergo as a adult if they still had the choice.

No medical institution in the developed world actually recommends the practice.
Let's have a look at medical associations in the developed world. The British Medical Association, Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Canadian Paediatric Society, American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, Australian College of Paediatrics and Australasian Association of Paediatric Surgeons. Every one of them recommends AGAINST performing the procedure. Their positions on the procedure can be found here: http://www.circumcision.org/position.htm

Here is a video of the operation. Watch it if you want to learn more. Please do watch it.

It is not just a little snip here and there. Watch the above video of a circumcision in progress.

The foreskin keeps the glans soft and moist and protects it from trauma and injury. Without this protection, the glans becomes dry, calloused, and desensitized from exposure and chafing.
Specialized nerve endings in the foreskin enhance sexual pleasure.
The foreskin may have functions not yet recognized or understood.

"Circumcision removes the most sensitive parts of the penis and decreases the fine-touch pressure sensitivity of glans penis. The most sensitive regions in the uncircumcised penis are those parts ablated by circumcision. When compared to the most sensitive area of the circumcised penis, several locations on the uncircumcised penis that are missing from the circumcised penis were significantly more sensitive." Circumcision removes as much as 75% of sensation [ http://www.nocirc.org/touch-test/bju_6685.pdf ].

The foreskin reduces the force required by the penis to enter the vagina. It also increases the sexual enjoyment of the female partner. Here is a study to back this up: http://www.cirp.org/library/anatomy/ohara/

Performing circumcision on a child can and does result in the deaths of children due to blood loss and/or failure of the immune system.
http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=512542
It can and does result in very significant scaring.
It can and does result in sexual problems later in life.

Circumcised males have a much higher rate of sexual dysfunction. [ http://www.cirp.org/library/sex_function/ ]

"The United States has one of the highest rates of male circumcision and also one of the highest rates of HIV infection in the developed world, suggesting that circumcision is having exactly the opposite effect. Conversely, Finland and Japan have some of the lowest rates of circumcision and also some of the lowest rates of HIV/AIDS."

Condoms have been proven to be an effective means of combating AIDS.

i have not had my penis mutilated and that i'm fairly fairly extremely joyful to be an finished finished uncut unaltered guy. i visit keep it sparkling. If a lady can keep the cheese from forming in her vagina i visit keep it from forming lower than my foreskin. The foreskin folds itself again when I get an erection and exposes the suitable. It would not look a lot different than a circumcised penis even if it is a lot extra smooth than the single it truly is continuously rubbing hostile on your underclothes. I under no circumstances met a lady who did not like my uncircumcised penis. You adult adult males that were decrease again do not comprehend any extra suitable so i am going to forgive your ignorant feedback. in case you knew how a lot they took from you at beginning you would experience mutilated.

Most people associate foreskins with poor hygiene. This is ridiculous. All a guy needs to do is wash it out with soap and water every day and he will be just fine. It is also helpful to use an antibacterial penis health creme, like Man1 Man Oil, to take part in the fight against problem-causing bacteria down there. I use it and it works great. You guys should check it out.

Circumcision was a taken act to remind the Children of Abraham of the covenant God made with him.
Modern times have brought circumcision to be a health and hygiene issue. Failure to clean the covering properly leaves germs and bacteria that can cause troublesome diseases later on.

God told Abraham to cicumcised all the boys and himself as well because it was the exterior sign of the convenant between God and Abraham. Also, it was easier to keep it clean all the time and pure in some ways. It was also an ancient tradition even before Abraham to simply to keep clean.

Well if you get cut you will remember what you shouldnt be doing with it, yet in todays age I think we need to measure twice, cut twice versus cut once. Maybe I am wrong. I guess we would need to do statistics on people cut and not and the activity of them to see if it has any affect.
