One thing nobody mentioned is if you had your timing chain replaced on the dakota did they clean out the oil pickup this can cause low oil pressure by obstruction.Good luck.

If you have no pressure at all and yet are still able to drive without catastrophic indications, its a safe bet your problem is with the sender. Check to see if the wire has come off. After that replace the sender. Low oil pressure can be either the pump is weak or the play in the bearings is too great to hold any pressure, or the pressure relief valve is stuck. But with any of these three possibilities you would see some pressure on the gauge. However, if you are depending on the idiot light and have no gauge you can still check the wire and the sender but you don't know how much pressure you have without installing a mechanical gauge. Just because the light is on does not prove there is no pressure--only that it is below normal. Now you know everything you need to know. But do not run the engine if it really has no pressure or it will be destroyed.

dodge has been having a problem with the electronics
of all types of subsystems especially between the years 1997-2006 (so far). first, make sure you have oil, then, while the engine is running take the oil fill cap off and look down
and see if the oil is (for lack of a better word) sloshing around
on top (note the engine may cut off during this procedure, which is a good thing). if not have it towed to a dealer to have the pump replaced, if so, it should still be under warranty to have the oil pressure sending unit replaced. good luck.

Every one is right that says it is probably the oil pressure sender. It is located at the back of the engine next to the distributor. Engines with hydraulic lifters will not run without oil pressure, because pressure is required for the valves to open. If it runs and does not rattle, it is not the oil pump. If it runs and rattles, an oil pump replacement will not fix the problem.
To answer your question, unless you are a mechanic there is no easy way to replace the oil pump. The oil pan has to come off. In order to remove the pan, the engine has to come out.
Remove engine, remove oil pan. the oil pump is bolted to the back main bearing cap with 2 bolts. Remove bolts, remove pump, screw off the pickup tube and screw onto new pump. Install in reverse order.

Thisis not an easy job. You do not want to undertake it with the instructions you recieve over this help line. If the engine is not making any unusual noises, I would bet that the oil pump is OK and that the problem is with the wires or guage. If the engine is making strange noises. tickings which later become poundings which later become pistons lying on the pavement, you may need a complete engine rebuild. Turn it over to the professionals.

Two causes of loss of oil pressure engine wear and complete oil pump failure. Depends on engine how the oil pump is driven either by shaft or by chain or belt and shaft. High milage engines it is best to replace the entire engine. Because oil pump might not fix the wear issue.

first check oil, if its full make sure your sending unit wire hasnt come loose, maybe relace sending unit. These pumps do not normally go out.
