Religion is more important, because it can span different cultures and still give two people common ground upon which to build a relationship.
Culture can be absorbed, and adopted.
Religion tends to stay constant.

Where both issues are concerned, it depends on the make up of the two people involved. People who see either culture or religion as unifying adjuncts to their lives will likely view their differences as a plus, whereas people who view religion and culture as exclusionary, divisive elements will likely be torn apart by those same differences once the "honeymoon" phase is over.

That's the problem with religion. It causes more misery in the world than anything else.

Just look at the Catholic and Christians as examples. They spread more intolerance, hatred, bigotry and ignorance than pretty much any other religion, and are responsible for more wars and massacres (Crusades, Spanish Inquisition, Salem Witch Hunts, yada yada).

Different cultures can mix, but sometimes a DEFINITE breakdown in a relationship can be caused by difference of religion.

Whether you love someone or not, if one of you is a believer in your religion... and you want to spend eternity with your loved one, you will want them to believe as you do. You will want to raise your children with your religion, etc.

I personally have had problems in the past with dating people who had no belief in God. They used it against me when they were angry and I eventually decided that raising children with someone who would treat my beliefs with such disregard wouldn't be worth it. Also, if someone treated things that were important to me that way... (I could understand NOT believing the same but ostracizing me for such things).. what else would they be intolerable of?
