Stray cats should get tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline AIDS (FL/FiV). This test only takes about 10 minutes and costs $16 at our clinic. So, you will know the results before you leave. It is a simple snap blood test. Exams at our clinic cost $50 (including "haz" for disposal of needles).

As far as vaccines go, by law, you need to vaccinate for Rabies ($18). Depending on the results of the FL/FiV test, I would also vaccinate the cat for FL (feline leukemia $20) and FVRCP (feline distemper $20).

If the cat does have FL/FIV, then obviously, it is unecessary to vaccinate against FL because he is already infected. If infected, this cat should be kept indoors and away from all other cats (unless the other cats are also FL/FiV positive).

It is also not a bad idea to get this cat on a flea/tick preventative, like Frontline Plus.

Some clinics (like ours!) give discounts for people willing to bring strays in for vaccinations... usually we only charge for a limited exam ($25) and do vaccines for free.

Hope this helps!

Let him know that she's a stray. He'll know what to check for. Because she's a stray and has probably never been to the vet, they'll do more tests than they would do on your house cat. Depending on what they find, and if she needs any meds, I would say plan on about 100.00-150.00 max, JUST to be safe, in case there is some kind of an issue. Her being a stray, they should be able to do some things for free or at a discount, though, so it could end up costing you only 50 bucks.

Vet checkup - $25-$50
Blood tests (you want to get if you want to get or have other cats!) - $50-$100
Shots ~ $100.

Call a vet and tell them that it is a stray. Ask if they have any assistance programs and tell them that you would really like to help the cat. Often they have funding to help you out.

You've gotten some good answers on what to ask for, but I'd also have them check whether she's spayed or not and if not, schedule a surgery. This may be of some help. It's a list of several organizations that help financially with spay/neuter surgeries and some also help with vaccinations as well.

Well to start just a full check up and get teh shots.
TAlk about having teh cat fixed.
You may want to have heartworm check and preventtative.
get a stool sample and wormif needed.
for a check and sohots and stool sample I would for safety figure about 45-60 but teh best thing I have found is just to call around and ask.
My sister goes to a vet who doesnt' charge for office calls and is extremely low cost. Wher I live for example for rabies it cost about $15-$20 but he only charges $5.
So call around.

I don't know which area you are in,but if you ring the Animal Welfare league they could recommend some Vets close to you who may be a bit more lenient with fees.
