Im only 14, but i used to do alot of metaphyics research, I heared REM (rapid Eye movement) is when you are really close to waking up, meaning your in the lightest of sleep stages, just like metatation. Some people during metatation exsperiance the same thing. I used to read alot of things about OBE (Out of body experiances) and one thing that i learned is when a person 1st trys to have an out of body exsperiance, and can actually do it, the first few times its more like you hovor over your body, (Just like levitation, just your spirit/soul w.e. u want to call it does it!), and i heard when you go back in your body, you feel an adnormal feeling, like falling. So what i think is, when you exsperience that, you just had a slight out of body exsperience, even though you are not aware of it. :-)

A few people have mentioned the out of body experience explanation. I remember reading about this, too. I read that the "falling" is the sensation of your etheric body returning to unite with the physical body. The "snapping" back connection created the "falling" sensation.

It is apparently common for the etheric body (and the astral body) to "wander" during sleep. Some people think this is one of the functions of sleep. This idea is not supported by science, but it still is an interesting idea.

I have experienced the falling sensation. I have also had out of body experiences. Those experiences have often been accompanied by violent sensations of internal spinning.

The rational, scientific explanation goes all over the place, but from my experience, those dreams signal an OBE (out of body experience.)

The 'falling' sensation is the feeling you get that, when your soul is traveling, it reaches a point of consciousness when you feel like it is in some sort of danger or surprise. Like any other danger response, your first instinct is to get out of Dodge yesterday, and with the fact that the soul can move at the speed of light from wherever it was back to your body, the sensation becomes interpreted as 'falling'.

Also, it feels like falling because although your spirit might be in an upright position when it is recalled, your physical body is lying prone, which means it has to return to your body and to its prone position. To go from a standing position immediately to a lying down position, in real-life, occurs when we fall, hence the feeling when we return.

Ive had that happen the last couple of nights. It seems right when I fall into REM sleep I'll jump like I fell awake...its weird. It wakes me up. But I don't remember dreaming of falling, because I've had those dreams too, but this was different.

This happens to me alot, mostly when I dream of falling.
It is always followed by me jerking awake, so I think it may just be the shock of moving like that.
I am not sure though.
