My new cat hid under the hideaway couch when he arrived yesterday, and now I can't find him. Could he have made himself a spot in the folded up hideaway part of the couch? I'm nervous about trying to open it up to see if he's there because I don't want to hurt him, and I know that I should leave him alone to adjust to his new home. But, I'm worried that he might be stuck. Thanks -

If the head can fit, so can the body.. Best thing to do is to move some food and water near where you think the cat entered the couch.

Do not open it!

the chances of a leg, tail or neck on the spings is highly probable.

Also break out a toy (Something dragged on a string that makes noise) and drag it around the couch to get the cats attention. You need to realize that cats need a secure place to call home in a new enviroment. Yours chose your couch. If all else fails, open a can of tuna and set it near the entrance you think was used.

A new cat who doesn't want to be found is very hard to find. Open the hidebed and find out. It's probably not there. A good place to look is under the bed inside the lining of the foundation. They go to places that are dark. It calmes them. It will be ok. Just keep food and water out for it and check it in the morning to see if it's eating. Also put a cat box with litter out to see if it uses the bathroom. This is how I noticed that my last kitten was still alive and here. After a month and a 1/2 she came out. This is usually a long period of time but she was a feral kitten and I had another cat in the house but he didn't bother her at all. Usually the process of coming out only takes a few days. good luck.

Yes he can. After giving your cat some time to adjust, try opening some food and leaving it out. If that does not work, carefully open the couch while a fellow human stands by to see that the animal does not get hurt.

Yes! Especially if he's a kitten. When mine were small they could climb through the small opening of the wall heater to get to the other side.
Try to keep things very quiet. If he's scared and it sounds like he is, any noise will keep him in hiding. Also he's likely hiding someplace warm, so it does make sense that he may be in the sofa-bed. He will most likely come out at night because they are nocturnal. Don't bother trying to lure him out, this may just scare him more.
Good luck, be patient and try not to worry.

Cats can and will go anywhere. I doubt if you'd hurt it to try to open the hideaway. If you started to hurt it, you'd soon know from the yeows you'd undoubtedly hear. Chances are though, he'll come out by himself if you just leave him alone. I find it hard to believe that he'd stay in there since yesterday. Are you positive he didn't get out of your home?

He could be in there...been there done that. What I do to get my cat out from hiding is get his favorite treat (canned cat food, cat treats, etc) and make it known that I have them...he comes out pretty quickly. If that doesn't work, you could wait him out since it is new surroundings, he's probably scared and needs time to adjust. If he was stuck, I'm pretty sure you would know...most cats let you know "loudly" that they are in trouble. Hope you find him...Good Luck!

Slowly open the couch. If you hurt it, it will cry out and hiss. But yes it will hide anywhere. DONT SIT ON THE COUCH UNTIL YOU KNOW FOR SURE ITS NOT THERE. It will come out when its sure its safe around the house.

They hide all kinds of strange places when in a new place. Try setting out some good-smelling wet food, and wait for him to turn up. Be patient. If you dig around looking for him he might just hide more.

Also, if he were stuck, I daresay you and the rest of your neighborhood would know about it by now. They tend to yowl frantically and flail about when they're stuck.

Yes he certainly could be hiding there. Cats can find away to hide in the tightest spots

They sure can. Be careful when you open it. Make sure he's alright and see if he'll let you give him some lovins. He needs some reassurance and TLC. Give him something good to eat and some fresh water. He'll eventually warm up to you.
