So paint one wall in a bright color then the others in shade of that color but lighter. Children love color.
CAn his dressers b painted.. Use u'r bright color for the dresser/bed etc.. for handles on the drawers.. go to thrift store & get cars &/or tools & gorilla glue them to the handles for some fun.
Do part of the wall w/ chalkboard paint & the other part of the square in magnetic paint.
Get some sale bin fleece material or canvas material & make a good size rug & paint roadways for his cars. then u could roll it up if u want. Make tools out of felt & velcro them to ur' closet door so he could play w/ them.
U could also glue cars//trucks to his bed posts. Or fun foam on his lamp shades or paint cars or tools on it.
U could even paint like a road on the bttm. part of the walls or wall & then paint a small person & then take his pix of his face to the copy place. Tell them that u'r decopage this to the wall so they will copy it in ink that won't smear & put his face in it.
u can also paint the bttm 1/2 or 1/4 in the dark color then the top w/ a littler color. U could run a stripe bet. the different colors in accent color. Like dk blue on the bttm & lt on top w/ red stripe.
Be creative... put u'rself in a child's place. If u liked cars/trucks & tools.. what would u like to do w/them to spark interest esp. to keep him busy in HIS room. have fun

I'm with you on white walls - they are harsh as well as boring!
Since the room is small you might consider a baby blue or a pale green (green opens things up) and go for a wide border in the middle of the wall with cars using some primary colors of bright blue or/and green.
Primary colors are stimulating and it's good not to overwhelm a baby with too much bright color. Using the softer colors as a background should make a fun room for you little son.

Get a car or tool border [ or make one ] and use one of the colors from it - yellow, green, blue, red - in primary crayon shades.
Paint the walls halfway up with this color.
Then paint the top half a lighter shade of same color [ banana,
mint or sage, baby blue.] or white/ivory with the border on top.
Add bedding/curtains in the bright, the light, or a second bright color.
Don't forget to use washable paint and scotchguard the fabrics!
Example: bottom half grass green. Top half light green. Add tool border. Bedding/curtains in bright blue.
Or start with the bedding/curtains with cars or tools, paint walls one of the colors, add border or stencils of cars or tools around the room

Have you thought about doing one wall in a baby blue & the others in a creme color? Do the wall that has a window or windows, in the baby blue. The lighter the colors, the bigger the room will appear. Another idea, is to paint all the walls a creme color & then buy a border that has cars on it. That way, it'd give the room a spacious look but yet it'd have color from the border. I love the borders they have at Lowe's. :)

I'd go with baby blue walls and find a lighter blue for the trim at Lowes and Home Depot there are so many colors to choose from and they have ideas right there with them, you could get a car and truck border for it also or something with tools on it. Go to the store and see all they have to offer you'll be glad you did and you'll be proud of yourself when it's all finished, it's really easy to do.

Paint the room light yellow/cream. Then take his hand and put some non toxic paint on it and make hand marks all around the room .It looks super cute.
Just dont dip his hand into the dry wall paint, find something less intense and less chemical. For example a water base paint wont be harmful

Light yellow is cheery. Maybe you could find a wallpaper border or something with cars on it, and it could come down later if you get tired of it or he does.
