You don't need to convert or download codecs, just use VLC media player. It plays all file types.
I recommend using VLC media player. Best part is it's free and completely free of spyware. It is also the most popular player out there.

EVERY video needs SOME sort of a codec. The only way you'll avoid codec problems is 1) include your own player (cost $$$ and programming) or 2) use a codec that everybody would have (and that'd be kinda difficult).
