He is what is known as recon. They scout forward areas for the enemy!
What Unit? The 1st Cav was in Korea when I was in the 7th Infantry Division. My first tour in Korea our compound was next the Gary Owen's on the same mountain, or the 7th Cav, Custer's outfit!
The 1st Cav was sent to Vietnam, but they actually were not the 1st Cav at all.
I was stationed in the 9th Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division before I was sent to Korea for the second time. The 2nd Inf Div at sand hill, Ft. Benning traded patches with the 1st Cav in Korea. So actually the unit sent to Vietnam was really the 2nd Infantry Division. There is a movie about that titled "We were Soldiers". Lt Col Hal Moore was the person the film was about and the one that led his unit into a place called the la Drang Valley, also known as the "Valley of Death"!
Moore died on September 11, 2001 in the collapse of the Trade Center!

Once again, MSG J has it right but I can tell you as a Cav Scout he will be acting for the most part as an infantryman down on the ground looking for insurgents, guarding checkpoints, patrolling towns and occasionally if not more often than not giving the enemy the maximum opportunity to give his life for his country

Ma'am,
The best place to go would be to your unit's Family Support Group. There are not only other spouses with insight but members (Soldiers) of the Rear Detachement who can tell you. The Army's Family Support Groups have much support and information to help make your Soldier's deployment a little easier. Some have periodic VTC (Video Teleconference) that you might be able to schedule with your Soldier. All have information about where the unit is and even pass digital photos to family members taken by commands or other Soldiers.
It really is a wealth of information and help.
Take care,
MSG J

first of all it should be your husband giving you all that info. If he is not up to the challenge then you two have some serious problems. Anyways, as long as you have his unit number you can call them and ask for the FRG leader's#. ( family readiness group, they are the people that pass on the info as far as what is going on in the unit, what resources are available to you as a military spouse and so on) they should be able to tell you what you need to know . You can do a search on line also, Good luck to you

His job is to go into areas and do extensive recon either for enemy positions, toc sites, or defensive positions, or unit bivouac sites. Cav scout means he rides an M2 Bradley when he's not using his LPC's.
