Typically they hire consultants because they don't have to pay the overhead (insurance and benefits to these people). So sometimes they can actually pay the consultants a little bit more and still come out ahead. Companies need also employees who tend to be more loyal and won't leave the job because they can get another consulting assignment. So I think they'll always be employees for them to fire but not necessarily in every job function.

You've struck a raw nerve. I am NOT a fan of "business consultants'. In my days as a corporate employee, I have found that they charge megabucks to tell the corporate management what it WANTS to hear, rather than what makes sense.

Several hundred thousand dollars later, the management of the firm can sit back with a couple of drinks and say to themselves "We KNEW we were right. The consulting firm confirmed what we thought."
