Even though I personally own this ultra compact camera, I would still like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:

1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. The flash setting for "red-eye" correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;
4. It's very small and light;
5. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards;
6. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it's built-in microphone;
7. It comes with a USB 2.0 transfer cable which you connect to your USB computer port;
8. Has tripod mount on bottom of camera;
9. And the price is a mere $120 [sold at Samy's Camera - www.samys.com, and Staples.com.]

Review(s) can be found at www.amazon.com [Query: "Nikon Coolpix L10" along with pictures provided by satisfied purchasers.]

Good luck!

I have a Canon A710IS. It's about $240 online. I know that exceeds your budget. It has some cool features like a 6x optical zoom, image stabilization (if you have shaky hands) and it takes 2 AA batteries. It produced 7 megapixel photos. Consumer Reports recently rated it very high on their list. After I bought one my Dad bought one also. It takes decent video in 640x480. I was able to shoot an indoor basketball game with good clarity. If you think you'll do a lot of video then get at least a 4 Gb card otherwise 2Gb is good. Battery life on this camera is exceptional.

Pentax Optio line is the best and they have a lot to choose from. Try to go for a lower mega pixel (5 is plenty) but the largest "optical" zoom.
Yahoo shopping points you to some great deals. I ended up buying a $400+ camera at almost half price from a shop in Maine through yahoo shopping. They delivered ontime. It was excellent.

Casio Z75 or Z1050 is a great choice, nice and thin, lightweight, shoots photos and video with sound. Easy to use controls and a 2.5" screen to view.
