I work at a small family business and the secretary does all the major things and I do the lower level things and the errands and greets guests. Would I be the secretary's assistant or the receptionist?

Sounds like you could be classified as an Office Assistant. In the clerical world there can be many titles for the same role. If you are also answering the phones, you could be the Receptionist.

Do they care what you call yourself.? Pick the title that sounds more impressive.
Use 'receptionist."It sounds more responsible that being someone's assistant.

I had a job ,the title was "rate clerk."The title was just something that was given to the job for years and years. One day,the mgr said should use the title," billing mgr." his reason was, if a customer called me with a problem, it would sound like I had more clout with a title of "manager. "

If you were not given a title when you were offered the position, you are free to choose whichever one you feel best fits the duties that you perform. "Office assistant" comes to mind.....

Job titles at this level are irrelevant. Just why are you concerned about a job title ?
