First thing you need to do is ask yourself how well do you think you're doing. Once you've done that, throw away the answer because everybody lies to themselves. You either overestimate or underestimate yourself. I've seen guys that think they're great when they suck, and guys that say they suck when they could kick my *** anyday of the week.

Ask your sensei how it is you're doing. He'll normally give you a reasonably unbiased opinion as to your progress.

Try practicing your kata in front of a mirror, or even video taping yourself doing them. This is a good way to check for weaknesses and poor structure.

Sometimes it is hard for a person to see if they are getting better. So besides your instructors opinion and other students I would also look at it from several standpoints. First in sparring; are you becoming better defensively and are other students and instructors having to work harder to score on you? Secondly are you scoring on them more often or with a greater variety of techniques? Are your techniques and combinations quicker and more accurate? Are you making sharper, harder contact with your techniques on the heavy bag and in your pad drills?

In self-defense are you able to execute your techniques faster and more easily-are they becoming natural to you. Is your sense of touch better- can you do the techniques with a minimum of effort and just the right amount of power without overwhelming the person or wasting effort and energy?

These are some of the things you can take a look at and consider. If you are doing better or just the same as you were a year ago in these areas then you have your answer. Also keep in mind that getting better is something that does not always happen quickly or right away so if the answers are no then you may need to take a look at how often you work out or how hard you apply yourself in class. Usually a student that puts in a 120% effort and only attends class three times per week will progress better and be a better student than one that attends five times per week and only puts in 70% effort.

I started doing weights also and thought that suddenly my kicks and punches felt somewhat weaker.. I asked my trainer what she thought, and she said that when you start doing wieghts because you are building muscle you are gaining more strength and endurance, so when you punch or kick it feel somewhat easier, therefore you feel like you havent put as much effort into it as before when it felt harder and more tiresome to do.. and because you are lacking this feeling of pain and fatigue so to speak, you dont think you are putting any effort in and feel like your skill are lacking, She said it is a surprising feeling, but it means you are getting better and stronger.. I really is hard to explain but I hope you get what I am trying to tell you!!

ok. i have the answer for you.
you are not doing any good at the martial arts.
it seem you don't get what martial arts are about.
it is not only developing strenght or kicking butts.
martial arts ar about developing you inner being.focusing your thougths, growing as a human being.
when you notice any change in this way, then you'll be in the right path.good luck.

One has to ask themself...

"Have I had my **** kicked recently?"

...and from there, your inner self will reply and you'll be one small step closer to knowing thyself.
