there should be buttons on the headrest guides on the top of the seat back, push them and the headrest will pull right out. the reason the manual tells you to taake it to your dealer it the SRS system built into the seat, side air bags if equiped, seat belt pre-tensioners ect, Ford doesn't want the liability of some dummy hurting themselves because they aren't smart enough to depower the system befor they start playing with it.

my last car was a focus and i could take the headrests out my self. Just push the buttons in on the black plastic rings and pull the head rest up!!

Any thing to get you there tho ,or that should have been doe . if they are fixed to the seat then that is the shape. there could be a little button at the base of the stem of the head rest that they will press and charge you £70 pounds thank you.
