I do not think that the line is thin between love and hate . But I do believe there is a thin line between hate and indifference. In fact indifference is more the antithesis of love than hate. Now this is not saying that hatred is right because it is not but there is a turnaround point with hatred and there is none with indifference.Indifference to me is worse because you do not acknowldege someone's existence but also consider someone's existence as unnecessary. The indifference to someone's existence is a major reason why people are left to starve , committed genocide against them, qnd other atrocities (Remember Armenia, the Holocaust, Uganda, Cambodia the Sudan etc was caused by an indifference to someone else existing to the point of considering them unnecessary and what is unnecessary is soon eliminated.)

There are three emotions that should be at work: love, hate and conscience. The conscience is the balancing point. Love is creative, hate is destructive. Your choice. If you want to go one step further and let God into the picture, your conscience and God merge into a concept known as "the fear of God". However, the word "fear" in the real and Biblical sense carries a meaning beyond "to be afraid of". Fear in the Bible means a respect like you would give your father (provided you have a human father you can respect...unfortunately many are not respectable). Hate is destructive. Forgiveness is a virtue. The balancing point is your conscience and your ability to define what is creative or destructive for you in the long term. Frankly, hate should never be an option. Just look at what is happening in the middle east.

Wow. Your question has sounds like it needs a serious answer instead of a smart aleck remark. I think the line between OBSESSION and hate is pretty thin. But I'd have to say that the distance between true love and hate is pretty far. I'll assume your speaking of romantic love here. The best definition of love that I can give you is this:
4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
That definition is from the Bible, 1st Corinthians Chapter 13. Whether you like the Bible or not, that's a good description of love. If you are loving somebody that way, you can never hate them!

It's pretty thin. Just because you're in one though doesn't mean you're close to the border though. Love and hate can both manifest themselves as opposites of the same extreme: being obsessed with somebody, to the point where their welfare is practically considered more important than your own.
And although I'm not the first to say this: the opposite of love isn't "hate"; it's "indifference".

Contrary to the common notion, no its not really thin. Just seems that way sometimes. What it is is that someone can do something so horrible that it'd make you go from loving them to hating them with the same passion.
