hi. the washcloth is to clean the surface of the altar. it's been gathering dust on it since i haven't been able to use the tablecloth, or the washrag on it.i also haven't dedicated the altar yet, i intend to on Summer Solstace. i know i'll have to cleanse the altar top as well.

I'm not sure what purpose a washcloth would serve on a Wiccan altar in the first place. But, I'd at least smudge it first.

It would be a good idea to reconsecrate the ritual tool/item again, just because of random energies that might have strayed into it from the mundane items in question. This could be as simple as washing the tool/item in salt water and/or smudging it with smoke from consecrated incense, but in my opinion it should certainly be done.

If your altar has not yet been consecrated, an unpurified washcloth should be fine to use, though I'd advise you to use a clean washcloth (just out of the laundry) and perhaps pause a moment to visualize cleansing light flowing through the altar after you've finished wiping up.

OK, there are two ways of cleaning your ritual tools, temple, and altar. There is the physical, mundane cleaning, and there is the ritual purification, the spiritual cleaning. So wash your ritual chalice out after the ritual, and I'm sure the gods won't mind if you put it in the dishwasher. But sage it as well afterward, or however you ritually purify your things. Your altar should, of course, be kept physically clean. You should dust it and clean up the incense ashes (thank you for reminding me to do this!) It's OK to use a mundane rag or washcloth to do this. If you prefer, though, you can purify a special cloth to clean your altar with, but it's not necessary. I use a wet paper towel. Once it's physically clean, sage it, cense it, sprinkle it with Florida Water, pray over it, Reiki it, do whatever you do to spiritually cleanse it. As far as the ritual tool that has been kept with mundane items, it should be fine, but if you haven't used it for a while reconsecrating it wouldn't hurt.

My simple opinion, the washcloth is ok cause you are cleaning the sacred space (you can always use consecrated water I suppose if you were unsure to clean with) As for the altar items I'm presuming? I would re-purify them. I do that a few times a year just as part of cleaning :)

Wash it... and then smudge it or cleanse the energy per your usual methods.
