I just finnished processing at a MEPS center and I'm set to be a machine gunner in the Marine Reserves (shipping in May of next year). I asked the MOS guy if I could be MCSF and he said I had to be active duty for that. He also said I could volunteer for it, so I'm a little confused... Can anyone clear this up for me? Thanks.

Once you leave the School of Infantry you're probably going to be going back home to resume your normal daily routine. What you're requesting is a "B" billet assignment (not a specific MOS) and it's only available to Marines within the active FMF (Fleet Marine Force). The answer is simple if you're willing to make the commitment: simply go active duty instead of reserves. The boot camp is exactly the same (and so is SOI), so if that's what you really want seize the opportunity. There's plenty of time to changeover before you ship out next May; it's just the matter of a little paperwork for your recruiter. Semper Fi.

keep this in mind, If you switch to active duty you can certainly request security forces, but the needs of the corps will always come first. I think you should go active duty, but not to be a machine gunner GO MORTARS 81mm. Just Kidding. The infantry, no matter what mos 03XX is the only way to go.
