Some of you have heard this one, I'm sure. It's on one of the Die Hard movies. There's 2 ways to do it, so get both of them.

Suppose you have two jugs that have exact capacities of 3 and 5 gallons and you have all the water you'll need to do the following task. The idea is to transfer water back and forth between just those two jugs or empty them as necessary to end up with exactly 4 gallons of water in the 5-gallon jug. It has to be exact, not an ounce more or less. Once again, there's two ways to do it - either starting by filling the 3-gallon jug or by starting with filling the 5-gallon jug.

Fill 3 gallon, dump into 5 gal., fill 3 gal. dump all but one gal. into the 5 gal.(happens when 5 gal is now full), dump out 5 gal, put 1 gal in 5 gal from 3 gal, fill 3 gal, put in the 5 gal for exactly 4 gallons.

Fill the 5 gal., dump into 3 gal, leaving 2 gal. in 5 gal., dump 3 gal bucket, put 2 gal from 5 gal into 3 gal bucket., fill 5 gall, dump 1 gal off into 3 gal pail with other 2 gallons already there. Now you have exactly 4 gal. in 5 gal bucket again.

1) Fill the 5 gallon jug
2) Fill the 3 gallon jug from the 5 gallon one. Now the 5 gal jug has 2 gallons left in it.
3) Toss the water from the 3 gallon jug and pour the 2 gallons from the 5 gallon jug into it.
4) Refill the 5 gallon jug.
5) Fill the 3 gallon jug from the 5 gallon jug again. Since it already has 2 gallons in it, it will only take 1 gallon from the 5 gallon jug.
6) Your 5 gallon jug has 4 gallons in it.

Second way!
1) Fill the 3 gallon jug. pour it into the 5 gallon jug.
2) Fill the 3 gallon jug again.
3) Fill the 5 gallon jug , leaving 1 gallon in the 3 gallon jug.
4) Empty the 5 gallon jug and pour the 1 gallon from the 3 gallon jug into the 5 gallon jug.
5) Fill the 3 gallon jug and pour the water into the 5 gallon jug, leaving 4 gallon in the 5 gallon jug.
6) Your 5 gallon jug has 4 gallons in it.

fill the 5 gallon jug, pour it into the 3 gallon jug, you are left with 2 gallons. empty out the 3 gallon jug and pour the 2 gallons from the 5 into the 3. refill the 5 gallon jug. fill the 3 gallon to capacity leaving 4 in the 5 gallon jug.

or

fill the 3 gallon jug. pour it into the 5 gallon jug. fill the 3 again. fill the 5 to capacity leaving 1 in the 3 gallon jug. empty the 5 and pour the 1 into the 5. refill the 3 gallon jug and pour it into the 5 leaving 4 in the 5 gallon jug.
