I am trying to install a DVD player (RCA DRC8335) and everything is setup the way it's supposed to be based on the digram in the book. However, when I switch the TV to video mode I can hear the sound but there is just a blue screen without a picture. The yellow AV cable is hooked up correctly and everything seems to be where it needs to be. Anyone have any thoughts? Do you think it's a problem with the TV or the DVD player? Thanks!

make sure, on the TV side, the audio connectors are matched to the proper video connectors

Simple test: Switch the video input of your TV. If you see video, but no audio, then they are mismatched.
If not, see below.

Also, do put a DVD disc inside the player, otherwise (if it is a recorder) it may try to output the Tuner input our Line 1 input which may not be connected yet. A disc will force it to go to the DVD menu.

The problem is video compatibility, PAL and the US standard are not compatible. They oscillate the vertical and horizontal scans at different rates, because of the voltage differences in the grid 220v Europe 110V US. Don't worry there are video converters out there, If the player is playing the movie i.e. track information, recognizes as a DVD you are half there. I would recommend they look for a NTSC to PAL box(see voltage issue above). Or depending on the DVD player, higher end units have this video scaling and inter-modulation line interpolation feature built in, and is a setting issue.

Answering as someone who worked in retail A/V for about 10 years, my first suspicion is an improper hookup, especially since this is a DVD recorder / VCR combo. There are several ways to hook up the video incorrectly on this unit and incorrect hookups are the root of such problems as you describe about 95% of the time with a new unit. If you are absolutely convinced you have it hooked up right, try the DVD player with another TV. If you don't have another TV try it at a friends house or go to the store where you purchased it and try it on one of theirs. Then try another source (that you know works) on that input of the TV. This will isolate the problem and answer your question with certainty.

You say that the yellow is hooked up properly but maybe you plugged the yellow into a wrong slot?
