I'll admit to getting the dishes out of the way, and picking up poo-poo undies, but that's about it.
However, on the few occasions where the maids have helped me capture live chipmunks (I still am not sure which cat was responsible), I always tip them extra, as hazardous duty pay. Chipmunks carry rabies, you know.

Of course! I wouldn't want the hotel room maid to think I'm a mess! How embarrassing! I tidy up... even pull the bedspreads over the bed and all. Don't most people?

Well, obviously they are being paid to clean...but you don't want to leave them a pigsty because obviously they have other clients they have to deal with.
So like, if there's stuff that can obviously be thrown away or folded, take care of that stuff. If one of your kids threw chips all over the carpet, try to take care of that before the maid gets there as best you can.
You don't have to clean for the maid, but at least be somewhat decent about what you're putting on her to-do list.

It depends. If it is a catastrophe, yes, I will tidy up like papers, or misc. that she shouldn't really be handling. If she is there to clean or dust house/room or make the beds then just that.
I wouldn't want her doing heavy or detailed work which would take more time or money.
In a hotel room, I would be pretty decent just to show respect.

Yes I always do. I also have my table all picked up and dishes stacked for the waitress when I go out to a restaurant. I think the maid and waitress always appreciate the extra effort.

lol Your question made me laugh!!! I am so guilty of this. When I'm at a hotel, I make the bed, fold the dirty towels, and take out the trash. I'm OCD about having a clean place. And I figure, I'm making someone's job easier - gosh I wish someone would do that for me!!!!

when we stay at a motel, I put all the garbage cans in one place, all the dirty towels and floor mat in the bathtub, I rinse out the coffee pot, try to make it as easy as possible for the maid because I used to be one, and because I'm nice. I leave a tip too.

I don't really get all that messy in a hotel room; I usually put my stuff in my suitcases and lock them, however. I find that locks keep honest people honest :-)
