There are indeed some atheistic organizations who "ask for money", or have a dues for members. They ask for money for the same reason just about every other organization, religious or not, asks for money: so that they can fund what they're doing, and help compensate for the out-of-pocket money, personal time, and effort spent by some of its administrative members.
Of course, an atheist does not have to join one of these organizations in order to be an atheist, just as a farmer doesn't have to join the 4H Club to be a farmer, or an African-American has to join the NAACP, or a Catholic has to join the Knights of Columbus in order to be a Catholic(even if K of C is Catholic-based).

as the old saying goes...if atheism is a religion than bald is a hair color.
those who cal latheism a religion obviously know nothing about atheism.
to put this into perspective...i dont beleive in leprechauns...does that mean im religious? nope.
same thing applies to god.

are you sure they do not ask for money. Madalene murray O hara was always asking for money. Dawkins makes money from his books . then watch In Touch by Charles Stanley , he does not ask for money after his sermons. here is a link to his website that gives all his outlets.
