Smoking anything is bad for you. He is putting tar in his lungs and he will develop the same risks and diseases that cig, smokers get. The main difference is there is no addictive nicotine in it. Weed is not normally addictive, but there is still a sense of addiction when stopped, although not nearly as bad as cigs. To put it simply, it's bad. How to get him to stop. He's 27, does he still live at home? It's sad if he does, that alone should stop him. I thought everyone stopped smoking weed after college, it's not really cool when you're "grown" up. anyway, sorry I do not have tips to get him to quit, but he just should.

Effects on the Lungs

A study of 450 individuals found that people who smoke marijuana frequently but do not smoke tobacco have more health problems and miss more days of work than nonsmokers8. Many of the extra sick days among the marijuana smokers in the study were for respiratory illnesses.

Even infrequent abuse can cause burning and stinging of the mouth and throat, often accompanied by a heavy cough. Someone who smokes marijuana regularly may have many of the same respiratory problems that tobacco smokers do, such as daily cough and phlegm production, more frequent acute chest illness, a heightened risk of lung infections, and a greater tendency to obstructed airways9. Smoking marijuana possibly increases the likelihood of developing cancer of the head or neck. A study comparing 173 cancer patients and 176 healthy individuals produced evidence that marijuana smoking doubled or tripled the risk of these cancers10.

"Marijuana abuse also has the potential to promote cancer of the lungs and other parts of the respiratory tract because it contains irritants and carcinogens9,11. In fact, marijuana smoke contains 50 to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than does tobacco smoke12. It also induces high levels of an enzyme that converts certain hydrocarbons into their carcinogenic form—levels that may accelerate the changes that ultimately produce malignant cells13. Marijuana users usually inhale more deeply and hold their breath longer than tobacco smokers do, which increases the lungs' exposure to carcinogenic smoke. These facts suggest that, puff for puff, smoking marijuana may be more harmful to the lungs than smoking tobacco."

Well weed still damages lungs just like cigarettes, and of corse it IS addicting. Some people have the will power just to stay with weed but many people say weed ends up not being pleasurable enough and go into "harder" drugs. So i would say just how dangerous it is includes: how many times a day, and if it is mixed with any other drug. BUT ANY DRUG IS DANGEROUS.

Any addiction is hard to quit but i would say hanging out with him most of the day so he has no time to smoke. But if he doesnt mind doing it around you, bring some one along who he would not smoke in front of. You can also involve him in some sort of hobbie

I have to chime in with a disagreement about djsquared's answer.

The real reason that cigarettes kill people is not because they're smoking something. It's because they're smoking a boatload of freaky chemicals that the tobacco companies add in to the cigarettes, to make them work better, and taste better. The average cigarette is only about 50% tobacco...the rest is chemicals like formaldehyde...they even add butter fat, to make it "smoother".

There are no studies that show marijuana is bad for you in any way, with the exception of driving under the influence. In fact, many studies show that it can help with quite a few different types of illnesses.

It's about as harmful to his health as having a beer after work each day. Millions of people all over the planet do it, and live to ripe old ages.

If he's not interested in talking about quitting, there's essentially nothing you can do to convince him. But if you love him, and this concerns you, just keep talking to him about it. Try not to lecture, 'cause none of us want to be lectured at, but let him know on a regular basis that you're concerned, and that you're there for him if he decides it's time to quit.

Well if he knows this or not, he can or will die early because he can be at risk to develop heart or lung disease and if I were you, I'll go on the Maury Show and call Maury and tell him why you want to be on the show and maybe their motivational speaker, D West, would or will appear on the show and D West will talk him out of smoking and he'll explain to you're son the dangers, effects, and who'll happen to him if he continues to smoke

WOW. just because a person smokes weed doesn't mean they aren't dependent and only once a week that is nothing.. You should try smoking with him, your whole opinion of weed will change for the better.
