Just curious what everyone else did and what worked and did not work for them. Who taught you, if anyone? What books etc did you use? I don't ever think I have good advice when ppl ask me for pointers.

I can't remember the name of the book I used. It takes time to perfect the Salah, may Allah accept our prayers, and keep us firm upon the Sunnah of His Messenger, and not let our hearts deviate after He has guided us, Amen.

It is best to learn the Salah from someone of knowledge, and let them show you the actions, instead of just reading a book. The Prophets Prayer Described by Shaykh Al Albani (Rahimuhullah) is a very good book to read,or have it explained to you.

It was reeeeaaaly tricky at first, lol! Of course there are alot of things to learn about prayer, so the best way is to take it one step at a time. First I started mimicing the movements of the sisters teaching me. This was the easiest and quickest part. From then, a sister taught me Al Fatihah. After I memorized and understood that, I moved to the last three chapters of Quran: Al Ikhlas, Al Falaq and An Nas. They were the shortest and easiest for a beginner, lol. After I got two of those down, I memorized Tashahuud and Salatul Ibrahimiya as well. Be sure that while you are memorizing these, you remember the translation if you don't speak Arabic that well. This way you know what you are saying and have all the right intentions. After you've got all that down without having to pause and remember what comes next, it's easier to learn sunnah, istikhara and funeral prayers. And more surah's of course!

Oh, and as an added tip whenever you come across a new sister... just tell her not to say "Oops" out loud when her hijab slips after her first sujood, lol! I did it and I've known a few others to do it too. Makes everyone around want to giggle, lol! After practice it doesn't slip, so no biggies.

It would be best to ask someone that you know to help you. I was born into a Muslim family but unfortunately my parents never taught me. My friend at the time, who is now my husband and is a Muslim convert before I met him, made a summary of a prayer book for me.

The following link is an excellent guide and is a demonstration of how to pray and what to say (of course how to pronounce as well).

I hope that you find your peace and your way.

My husband taught me. He helped me phonetically write the prayers in a notebook and I used it until I learned it all. I also prayed with him and talked to his mother and sister about the subtle differences in how Muslim men and women pray. He is a wonderful teacher. I feel very blessed to be his wife.

I watched other people to learn the manners of prayer.
For recitation I had someone write out the Arabic in transliteration and memorized it from there.
