Especially when playing electric w/ distortion, sometimes even trying mute the other strings with your right palm (the strumming/picking hand), you can still get a ton of vibrations and stray noises from the other strings. Do you use your left hand as well to help dampen those other strings? Or, should there not be some much sound from the other strings (i.e., something wrong with my amp set up).

I use the fingers of my left hand simultaneously with the heel and palm of my right hand to dampen any strings I need to muffle.

While playing rhythm, I use the on-and-off technique with my left hand to muffle or mute strings I don't want played.

Depending on what I'm playing, I may wrap my thumb around for the low E or A. I will left my index finger some where it meets the palm if I'm going for a bar chord and want to mute the higher string(s). Or, if I'm going for a bar power chord I will often just leave my finger where it's suppose to go but not hold the string down completely. Just a few techniques. All of it takes practice to master the sound you want. Keep working at it!

Depends on what I'm playing, usually the flat part of my right hand.
