Bendix invented the first front loading automatic washer in 1947, although the first ever Automatic (top loading) was invented by them in 1937. American models where imported into Europe in the Post WWII years, but the first European Model was not built until 1951. Even into the late 1970's people had top loading "Twin Tub" style Washer/Spinners by the likes of Electolux. It was not until the year 1960 that Candy produced the first fully automatic machine with an integrated 'spinner' as we have today.

1960 was also a landmark, as the first fully automatic self-service launderette in the UK opened in that year.

I recall my family installing a BENDIX front loading automatic in 1950. It was still in use in the mid 60s
