My husband and I decided to take on our nephew for the summer and I'm not sure if I made the right decision. He has been raised in an environment that we don't raise our own kids so he is different then our three we already have. Different is ok but the lying and arguing have made my children despise being around him. I'm not sure what to do. He's old enough to play outside by himself but he annoys the heck out of my kids. I know it sounds like they are spoiled but they just don't want him here and I'm not sure if I'm being fair. Help, will it get better or should I give up while we're all still ahead?

While he is with you, parent him as you would your own. Have a family meeting (include him) to try and resolve the issues. Set some ground rules and give him some responsiblilities around the house. Check out Love and Logic for parents by Jim Faye...lots of great parenting tips! You have an opportunity to teach him...no matter what, you are teaching him something. What would you be teaching him if you give up?

been there.you must think of your own kids and husband and family first! his mom or dad or who ever he is with now will just have to handle it.if they have created a spoiled brat they need to put up with it so they can clean up their own mess.too many people are rotten parents and when they are tired of it they want someone- anyone to take care of their problems.it wont get better- next time think before you offer something like this! it was probably said without much thought as to what you were taking on.good luck.

i HAVE A NEPHEW JUST LIKE HIM, aND FROM EXPERIENCE, YOU CAN TEACH A DOG NEW TRICKS, SORT OF SPEAK. tHE FIRST FEW DAYS, IT CAN BE ROUGH, BUT FOCUS ON ALL HIS GOOD QUALITIES..PRAISEHIM, GIVE HIM A SENSE OF USEFULNESS AND SELF WORTH...BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT HE LACKS..PROBABLY BOUNDARIES AND HUGS. BUT BE PREPARED FOR HIM TO BE THE SAME TURD HE WAS AFTER HE RETURNS HOME...GOOD LUCK..

Please -- Do not call this "Summer Adoption". This is insulting to all those touched by adoption!

Go to the "Parenting" section and ask your questions there. This is NOT adoption. You have not committed to this child. And now because he is not perfect, you want to dump him. Please don't ever adopt.
