Earrings for males "in uniform" were allowed until approximately 1925. The Navy allowed males to wear earrings in civillian attire until about 1988 when males were restricted from wearing earrings in civillian attire while on base, base clubs or at any military sponsored function such as a Command Christmas Party ot Picnic.
Note: The US navy did away with beards on 1 January 1984.
Main reason was, beards would interfere with the proper seal of a gas mask or OBA mask.

Not in my lifetime, but there was a time they could wear beards. and the Navy did away with that about 15 years ago i believe.

Maybe, but it wasn't the style then. The first offical dress code was written in 1791.
