"If I am due Feb 5, would it be "too late in the game" ...?
To have a baby registry for Christmas time rather than asking family for specific gifts? We both come from very large families that could honestly by our entire nursery there are so many cousins and Aunts and Uncles. I feel like we should probably have most of the stuff by then though or does it matter?"

People ask their families for 'specific gifts' at Xmas? They expect their families to buy nurseries?

Am I missing something; is this kosher somewhere? The answers are all, so far, 'Sure, go for it!'

Some families do that - ask for specific things for Christmas, and expect to get them. Some families it's the way things are done that the rest of the family chips in to help buy nursery furniture. Hopefully this woman will reciprocate with her extended family. It's a nice way to do it, as long as it's 'how we do it' not a demand by the parents to be. Family solidarity and all. With a family that large, I'd think that over a lifetime they'll spend at least as much on other family member's nurseries, if not more, as they would spend on their own.

If that's the kind of family she and her partner have, then sure, it's kosher. My family made it clear that if there was anything I needed but couldn't afford, I shouldn't worry, they'd ensure I had it. They were very generous in gifts, but buy a nursery? Uh, no. Then again, they're helping me with legal costs so I can get sole custody of my son, hopefully. My son's parents gave us a pack and play - his mom wanted to buy a crib, he said no, long story. My family is going to contribute to an RESP (uh - tax-deferred savings for child's education in Canada). But I'd never 'expect' this.

I agree with you, pretty tacky question. Who in the hell would have the audacity to ask their family for stuff for the nursery 2 months prior to the baby being born. Duhhh, that is what a baby shower is for. If I am not right, isn't that the point of a baby registry. You would think with a big family, she would be showered with gifts. Obviously this is someone who is simple-minded and is too broke to even be having a baby.

Yeah, probably so. If it's a young couple starting out and have a new baby, the family will most always help out, especially when there's baby showers and parties for the couple.

Who buys Xmas presents for a baby that isn't even born yet? Shower gifts, yes. I think it's rude.

She is obviously second-guessing herself; hence the question. That is all. So, you don't agree. Neither do I...so? Why take the time to actually copy and paste the question into your own...and make an example (fun of) her? Pointless.

An in law of mine always asks our family for specific Christmas presents. It's pretty tacky to me. That's not really what Christmas presents are about.

my family usually asks for specific things that we want for christmas, we do it for the kids and tell them we don;t want anything for ourselves, then they have to use their imagination if they still get us something.

I saw that question and i to thought it was highly inappropriate to ask your family to pretty much buy you everything for the baby.
