I was recently prescribed vicodin for a surgery I had. My boss went nuts at the thought of having some and has been asking me daily for pills. I have given him some but I need them for pain. I just don't get the attraction - they don't do much except help me sleep at night through the pain. He calls them happy pills. What's up?

That guy who said its like cocaine has major problems. It dosn't even compare to cocaine at as low as 10%. It makes you relaxed and worry free, so the drug to compare it to should be "Heroin". People take it because it sometimes gives you a feeling of being "Drunk". The people who take it for fun usually take MORE than the recommended dose, but even at a regular dose it gives you A really nice buzz IF YOUR NOT in any pain. I took it when I had surgery, and I also took it when I wasn't in pain and you notice "The buzz" feeling when you take it when your not in any pain. When your in pain you dont get the buzz. Vicodin is the most USED prescription narcotic drug in the world.

I too am on vicodin for a pain from a chronic back problem. I'm having spinal fusion next week. I have been on vicodin for nearly a year and I agree w/you -- I don't see what the attraction is. I believe it to be this: Vicodin can cause a "feel good" feeling. This happened to me when I first strated taking it, but wore off after a couple weeks. And because I have been taking it for so long, I now require higher doses for it to help w/my pain. For people like your boss, if they don't take it regularly, if they can get their hands on some it will give them a "high." The addiction sets in when people keep taking it to get that high feeling. They will end up taking more pills or higher doses to get that high feeling. I am not the least bit addicted to these pills. For me, all I can think about is how much damage they are causing my liver and the fact that I am always constipated from taking them! My high in life will be being able to walk WITHOUT taking pain pills -- and I'm hoping that will be soon after my spinal fusion surgery next week.

You need to be taking the Vicodin as it is prescribed. If you find taking it every 8 hours is too long to wait then take it every 6. These meds are given to last over these certain time frames and the longer you wait the longer they take to ease your pain. Two ruptured discs are serious pain associated injuries and the doctor has prescribed you vicodin to ease the pain. Stop worrying about being addicted and take them as you need them. When you start taking them because they make you feel better and you are not in pain then you may have a problem. Good Luck!

I understand that people enjoy the narcotic effect. Some people just get the 'sleepies' from the pills like you. others really get a high from them. Others, like me for example, actually get decent pain relief from their use. Unfortunately, it's people like your boss that keep doctors from prescribing it for those of us in chronic pain. I hope all is well with you after your surgery. Best advice- try not to let your co-workers know you have them, or your Dr. may cut you off if you run short and still need them.

I totally agree. I was prescribed them about two years ago for Rheumatoid Arthritis. (It is much worse than you think in terms of pain). But all they do is knock off the edge. On a really bad day I take one every four hours. But in general it is one maybe two a day.

I have a non addictive personality so I guess that is the reason.
They just do not seem even exceptional. About the same as two max strength Excedrin. (but they have done stomach damage) so I cannot take them any more..

It is similar to and has the effects of 90% pure cocaine, along with an antihistamine type effect, thats why its called the "happy pill". If you only take the dosages prescribed, you get relief from the pain, but it doesnt give you the other narcotic effect because you are getting the pain relief. When taken without having any pain to relieve, it produces the more severe narcotic effect.

When you take a medication, it causes a feeling of euphoria, similar to having an orgasm. Some people feel it and some don't. Obviously your boss does.

Different people react differently to medication/drugs. That is why some smoke 2 packs a day, and some try it and never smoke again.
