First of all, let me say that if a person finds comfort and happiness within their church, I am happy for them. I am not out to put anyone down.
For myself, I find that organized Christian religions do not meet my needs. The bible can be very confusing and contradictory at times. If you study the history of the bible, you will find that the earliest copies weren't even recorded until several hundred years after the death of Christ. Then, all of the copying was done by scribes. Many of the scriptures were copied with unintentional or intentional mistakes. Next, the bible as we know it today was put together by a group of political and religious leaders at the time of Constantine's reign. Some of the books were excluded because they were not thought to be fit to include in the bible. After this was done, it was later decided to also include the Old Testament as part of the bible.
I believe God is a benevolent Father who loves us unconditionally. When I see discrepancies in the scriptures and writings that are demeaning to women (or have been interpreted to be demeaning to women), I find it hard to believe that the message is truly from God. I have read and studied many religions throughout my life, and I find many true and beautiful principles in each of them. Rather than slavishly clinging to a religion that makes me feel unworthy, guilty or uncomfortable, I choose moral standards that I know to be correct and try to live my life by them. In that way, I do not feel like a hypocrite before God; I feel very comfortable and at peace with who I am.
A good test of church dogma would be to ask yourself these questions:
1. Does this teaching make me feel loved, peaceful and comforted?
2. Is the motivating force behind this teaching love, or is it motivating people through guilt and fear?
Those answers have always helped me find the pathway I want to follow.
Good luck with your searching and may God bless you.

I don't feel hated or degraded by my Church. Women are well-respected in my Church and have been since Mary gave birth to Jesus. I don't feel abused in any way, so no, I'm not a glutton for punishment.
I do know that some sects are abusive toward women. I have no interest in belonging to one of those. But if that's what you are talking about, you have to understand that the Church is bigger than one wayward sect.

the actual answer to that's based upon the denomination and way of existence of the Christian in contact. oftentimes marriage to a non-Christian is discouraged yet not banned. Why do you ask such an ignorant question? Is it just to show your utter ignorance or to, also, show that you have absolutely *no* firsthand knowledge of the Bible?
Try picking up a Bible and *actually* reading it instead of just going by hearsay!

I really sincerely hope that you will add something into your additional comments to explain to us HOW our religion is hateful and degrading to women. I am not being sarcastic, I am really puzzled about this. I am a strong happy christian woman who is very familiar with my Bible, and I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. If you add some details, and I have time later, I will be happy to edit my response to answer your question.

The church I belong to doesn't treat women in a degrading manner. In fact the national head of my church is a woman. Women are in a lot of leadership roles throughout my church as well. As a Christian, I tend to follow the New Testament a lot more than the old. Also, I tend to ignore that chauvinistic Paul and focus on Christ.

Its not hateful or degrading to women. Only someone who's never actually read the bible, and I don't mean taking a few scriptures out of context, but actually reading it, would think its degrading or hateful to us.
