Wait, I'm confused too.
If non-existence is a state, then isn't it something? And if it is something, doesn't it exist? So how could it be non-existence if it exists?
So, I'd have to say no, non-existence is not the state of calm nothingness for how could you even measure the amount of calm if it is not there.
But wait this discussion is getting as absurd as a Zen Koan. Wait a minute while I take my shoe off to throw at you. :-)
Peace

Remember... the idea of existence is an anthropomorphic principle. There may be something OTHER than existence.
Edit: Graciela, if you didn't exist, where would you be to Observe that calm nothingness. You are not your body, thoughts, ideas and feelings, because there is something in you higher than that Observing these things. What is the Observer? Is it you? I would say yes.

'nonexistence' is something and 'nothingness' is something else.
But let's deal with youe issue. You're somehow a philosopher.
Have you read Hamlet's "To be or not to be, that is the question."
That'e the big cause in our life, my dear. We have to struggle and suffer. The more we struggle, the more we succeed, the happier we are.

How would one know that? If nonexistence includes noncognizance, There would be no way of knowing.
