Yes, knowing how to snowboard, wave board, or skateboard would be helpful. It might not seem like it when you start but you actually will be far ahead of beginners without any of those skills. Try to start out by just paddling for and catching waves, get used to the sensation of catching a wave. You can also practice standing up from a prone position. The 3 point stance (football) gives you a lot of stability while beginning to rise to your feet. I hope you enjoy it, surfing is a wonderful sport. Or art. Or dance...

Im like, in the exact same situation as you. I snowboard a ton, and sometimes skateboard. I'm actually trying surfing next month. I know lot's of people that snowboard and surf. They say that it's easier to learn if you've snowboarded/skateboarded.

But, the steering for surfing is the opposit of snowboarding.

Good luck!

Surfing is arguably the hardest of the board sports to learn (the ocean is unpredictable). Also your weight is distributed differently when surfing as compared to snowboarding or skating. Having said that, if you tend to have good balance and are somewhat athletic, you shouldn't have much of a problem learning to surf.

Similar but you don't have to catch snow or concrete. YOu do have to catch a wave. A little trickier. And if you're not big wave surfing, it's really not that close except for standing on a board.

Just to make it more clear, it's really easy to stand up, you should be able to do that within 20 minutes or so, but it's actually being able to do stuff that makes it trickier.

If you are good at balancing, surfing is REALLY REALLY EASY. Definately try it...it'll be worth it and it's really fun.
