I think the best idea would be to sit down with dad and decide what type of dog you both like. Do you want small as in Jack Russel maybe or small as in very small like a Chihuahua? Do you want a puppy, or would a slightly older dog be best? Pure bred or a cute lil mutt? Once you have decided on a breed then do lots of research so as you know what to expect when you get your new family member.
Finally you start the search for your new friend. If you want a puppy look for a good breeder with a good reputation. Forget pet stores and back yard breeders. Forget the so called "designer dogs" too. You can also try shelters and petfinder as they often have puppies too. If you want a slightly older dog try shelters or petfinder.
Enjoy the search for your new friend. be sure not to fall for the first cute face you see. I always say you should let the pet choose you. You will know right away when you see the right one.
Good luck with finding your new friend.

I see. So your dad wants a dog for company after you leave so he won't be 'lonely.' That's hardly a reason to get a dog. Just what is the dog to do while he is gone from home every day and at work?
Has anyone in the house bothered to think of what is in the best interest of the pet? This is not a new toy, or a vase or a new car that you can set aside. This is a living being with wants and needs and feelings! When your dad is away at work, who will keep the dog from howling out of boredom or frustration? Who will have to deal with the angry neighbors? Is your dad prepared for vet appointments (with all the costs involved)? What about walking the dog every day? Or is he busy at work for 12-14 hours each day?
He had better sit down and think this through. This is not a competition just because your mom has a dog. And YOU need to stop making comparisons between the two persons and what is available to you at each place. You are sounding rather manipulative.

Decide on a type of dog. Short haired? Long haired? Your dad needs to decide how much grooming he wants to do.
I used to recommend wire coated terrier mixes to people. Non-shedding usually. Easy to keep clean. Some active, some are calmer.
I'm a groomer so I hate to see people get dogs that need a lot of brushing or care and then not be able to keep up on them. I've met plenty of matted Poms and Pekes and snappy Min Pins.
Any breed or mix has the potential to be a good dog. The owner can ruin a dog.
I'd say look at the local dogs for adoption and ask for input from the shelter workers.
I prefer small dogs that aren't too tiny. Very small dogs can be very hard to housebreak and you have to avoid accidentally stepping on them, so usually no shoes in the house.
My first dog was a female Shetland Sheepdog, 14lbs. Barky, yes, but I trained her to bark only when there was a reason. Loyal and smart. I trained her to voice commands and hand signals. She did shed, I brushed her every day and before and after a walk. She lived 14yrs. and I miss her still.

I'd go visit a shelter and meet some of the dogs there. Pick one that isn't a puppy (so it is easier to potty train or is already potty trained) and find one that both of you like. Make sure the dog's personality fits with you and your dad. This way you are helping a dog get a good home, and you are able to pick the dog that fits in with you the best.
Good luck.
You can look at dogs in that area on www.petfinder.com

Absolutely now not. If your mother will percentage within the care of the puppy and does now not desire it, she won't take delivery of it and can make you carry the puppy again (more commonly to the refuge). That is simply undeniable merciless to the puppy. Don't get a puppy simply due to the fact it is Christmas. Wait until Mom is capable. PS Christmas is a particularly standard occasions to undertake puppies--you're much more likely to discover a fascinating adoptable puppy at an extra time of yr besides. Now isn't a well time to discover a good-behaved well breed at a refuge.

I recomend a Pekingese. They are very smart and entertaining. They don't beg for your attention or bother you when you don't want to be. But they will give unconditional love. Although they can be a bit stuborn they will do anything for food. They don't need much excersize either. I can go on and on about the breed. I don't think any pekingese owner would not agree with me when I say they are the BEST small breed. Though if you don't think they are the most adorable things you've seen you can look around online there are many sites that will tell you which is the perfect dog for you.

I agree with Jocelyn completely. The best-tempered dog we have ever had was from the kennel. And let him or her pick you out--not vice versa. While all the other dogs were snapping and growling, she stood up on her back legs, put her paw on the cage, and gave me a look like, "Hi! How ya doin'?" Look in their eyes, and you'll see which one is right for you.
