Protein is a huge topic, one that can cover all areas of biology. Protein is a natural dietary necessity, it should cover roughly 30 percent of all your dietary intake. (some argue twenty, but im not here to discuss that.)
Protein in the body is needed primarily for building, from brain cells, to muscle tissue, to skin and bones. Your body needs protein, and the more you have, the better off you'll be. (within reason.)
protein powder is plenty good for you. if your mom bought it from trader joes, it sounds like you have the milk and egg protein powder. protein is all geared depending on what you want to use it for. so before you really choose a supplement, you should really establish what your goal is with it. in this case, milk and egg protein powder is mostly used for a dietary supplement, an aid in overall generic health. however, it could also aid in building muscle, if you were working out, although its not the best on the market for that purpose.
so while protein is such a broad topic, the first thing you need to know is what you really want to use it for. enjoy!

Bodybuilders often take a powdered form of protein, the essential building blocks for muscle. Protein powder is generally consumed immediately after exercising, or in place of a meal. Having sufficient protein intake allows for efficient growth and repair of muscle tissue.
Whey protein is the most commonly used type of protein. It contains high levels of all the essential amino acids not produced by the human body, and is absorbed by the body very quickly.
Casein protein is the richest in glutamine, an amino acid that aids in recovery, and has casomorphin which helps the body to absorb the amino acids over a long time.
Soy protein contains all essential amino acids, and is an alternative protein for vegetarians. However, soybeans contain a type of phytoestrogen called isoflavones which have a weak estrogenic activity .
Egg white protein is a lactose- and dairy-free protein.

I use Designer Whey protein powder to help me gain and maintain body weight while training for endurance events.
Here's what Whey Of Life has to say:
Whey protein is a pure, natural, high quality protein from cow's milk. It is a rich source of the essential amino acids needed on a daily basis by the body. In its purest form, as whey protein isolate, it contains little to no fat, lactose or cholesterol.
Whey protein provides a number of benefits in areas including sports nutrition, weight management, immune support, bone health, and general wellness.
Whey protein is an excellent source of the essential amino acid, leucine. Leucine is important for athletes as it plays a key role in promoting muscle protein synthesis and muscle growth. Research has shown that individuals who exercise benefit from diets high in leucine and have more lean muscle tissue and less body fat compared to individuals whose diet contains lower levels of leucine. Whey protein isolate has approximately 50% more leucine than soy protein isolate.
Whey protein helps athletes maintain a healthy immune system by increasing the levels of glutathione in the body. Glutathione is an anti-oxidant required for a healthy immune system and exercise and resistance training may reduce glutathione levels.
