I have never had to get one before this, so I want to figure out my options without involving my insurance company yet.

If you have a good company, get it from your insurance. In most cases, there would be a small fee.

You should shop around, but your insurance company might make it hard for you to drop their policy. Don't let them charge you extra fees for leaving them. Just let your current policy lapse and there is nothing they can do about it.

Chances are the rates for sr-22 are about the same anyway - HIGH! I think I got a decent rate from progressive.

You have to buy liability insurance in order to get a SR22. So to get it through another company you would have to buy another policy.
