Walking my 20 lb dog on the leash down my quiet steet (broad daylight) big husky looking fella starts trailing my dog (ignored me completely) got in front of my dog to look him in the eye (i think that's why he made sure to get up in front of him). Then the scary thing happened...he just pounced, smashed my dog onto the cement, went for the neck...that's when my dog was howling and screeching like i'd never heard before. That broke my panic and I kicked the dog off of mine. I'm still traumatized that I may have hurt him, even though I had to help my own pup.

Was this dog attempting to kill my dog like he was prey, or just trying to hurt him/scare him? I don't know if it was a stray or just got out, but now i'm terrified it'll be out there, waiting to rip my dog to pieces.

PS my dog is extremely submissive.no dog has never tried to fight him, if they do anything, they will try to mount him. Don't know if this matters.

Unfortunately this dog sounds like it is out to hurt. I would be concerned, and you should call your animal control/ ASPCA in your area. This is a menace of a dog, and the owners should be held responsible. Carry pepper spray with you, and be careful.

Having had a dog that was indeed killed by another, I can tell you that dogs sometimes DO see other dogs as prey. When an animal assumes a threatening stance and attacks, going for the neck - it's better for you (as the owner/protector) to assume the worst with a dog you don't know - then to allow the unknown dog to kill yours.

You are the alpha dog in your pet's pack. It's your job to take care of these things.

It's a tricky one. It is unusual that the husky dog ignored you completely. On the other hand, if you managed to kick it away, it probably means it wasn't full-on attacking your dog. Most dogs avoid direct confrontation - fighting is a last resort. Where was the other dog's owner? Maybe it is a stray and is acting out of the insecurity it feels being excluded. I think the dog warden needs to be informed, if you don't know who the other dog's owner is.

I don't know that the dog meant to kill your dog. However, the loose dog certainly was engaging in dominant behvaior. Sometimes dominant dogs just toss other dogs down and briefly hold them by the neck to let them know they are the leader. Still, I'd be concerned about this dog running loose. This dog could become a problem for children in your neighborhood, too. If you see it again, call animal control or the police. You might want to carry pepper spray with you on your walks just in case.

Keep away from that dog--he's going to hurt someone badly, if he hasn't already. No responsible dog owner should let a brute like that out off of a leash. Next time, he might attack a child, even though attacking another dog is bad enough. Don't worry about hurting him--he was going to do a lot worse to your dog, and possibly to you. It was self-defense, pure and simple.

it depends im a little worried because if a dogs stares another dog right in the eye its a challenge but if the dog bit the top of his neck he might of just been showing his authority if he bit the bottom he be trying to hurt him i would recomend that if it happens again pull the big dog off by the back of the neck this shows him that u are the top dog and u are incharge not him

It's hard to say without seeing it but I've seen a Shepherd mix do what you describe to a very submissive Lab when the Lab 'took liberties' by getting between the Shepherd and a human with food. I think maybe this dog was being territorial. It's not often that dogs hunt other dogs like prey so I really doubt that's what happened.

It looks as if that dog was trying to get a reaction from yours for a fight.. If you don't know who this dog belongs to I would call the SPCA or nearest animal shelter and inform them what happened.. they might try to locate the dog owner .. I certainly would not walk my dog the same route again until I was sure this dog was no longer a threat..

I find the little dogs way over react when they get "attacked." I've seen a bigger dog go after a small one and the bigger one had barley even touched it when the smaller one started screeching something horrible! It does sound kind of like an attack, so I would go to the owners house and notify them that their dog has endangered your dog and yourself as well as the neighborhood and next time it could be more serious. I hope you dog is OK.

I'm sorry that this happened to you and your dog I would've freaked if any dog attacked my dog .. definitely be careful if you choose to walk your dog around that area and if you see that do any where near your dog pick your dog up .. if possible locate the owners if he/she has any and get your dog checked out by a vet to make sure he didn't puncture or damage anything inside your dog. Hope you and your dog get everything worked out . Be safe
