I've just read two answers that say we did not evolve from monkeys or apes, but from a common ancestor with the chimpanzee.

If we're going to fool the religious folk, we have got to get our stories straight.

Humans and chimps diverged from the ancestral -ape- stock some time after the Gibbon, the Orang, and the Gorilla (in that order).

The family of apes diverged from the ancestral -monkey- stock sometime after the split between Old World monkeys and New World monkeys (recall your biology classes and the subject of prehensile tails in NW monkeys but not in OW monkeys).

So are we descended from apes? Are we descended from monkeys?

Are we going to get our stories straight? ;-)

Note to the Satanic Evolutionary Conspiracy: you owe me five points.

It is a proven fact that ID is a thinly-veiled attempt to slip religion in as "science". The court has ruled.

We share (if I recall correctly) 98.5% of our DNA with chimps. Somewhat less with Gorillas (which are equally divergent from Chimps): thus pointing to gorillas splitting off from the main trunk, followed by chimps and the human ancestor (used to be australopithecus, but that has been replaced with a number of contenders).

Since gorillas and chimps are apes, so was our ancestor.

As for suggestions I'm not me: how does one fake a "top contributor' badge?

I suspect that makes me pretty well invulnerable to cloning :-)

There are different levels of grouping of animals. All people belong to the SPECIES Homo Sapiens. All Homo Sapiens the CLASS Mammalia. All Mammals belong to the PHYLUM Chordata.

If evolution is correct we all descend from non- human Chordata. We all descend from non-human Mammals. We all also descended from non-human primates (probably monkeys). Some of these monkeys, unlike modern day monkeys with whom we share a "common ancestor" but monkeys non the less, evolved into apes. These apes need not be like modern day apes to be apes. The ape familly diverged and humans are a part of that divergence.

The "we didn't evolve from apes we evolved from a common ancestor" is complete bunkum. There is no class, order, familly or species of animal that answers to the name "common ancestor". "Common ancestor" does not designate a species but a relationship between various taxanomic groupings. We share "common ancestors" (note the plural) with every complex animal on earth.

Note that not even Creationists insist on my having a (singular) ancestor. It is accepted that I have two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents etc etc. If I am descended from the English, the Scots, the Irish and the Welsh noone asks me to "get my story straight"?

We are descended from both monkeys and apes. In fact we ARE apes. Homo Sapiens are members of the ape familly: both your parents are apes and you are thus, quite directly, descended from apes.

Nice try. Evolution does not make any such claim. Humans did not evolve from either modern apes or from monkeys. Humans evolved from a common ancestor - an ape-like ancestor which was neither a modern day ape (chimps, gorillas and orangutans etc) nor any type of monkey. The only one who needs to get their story straight is you.

We didn't "evolve from" apes--we ARE apes.
In every taxological way that matters. The "common ancestor" response to the "if we evolved from monkeys/ape, then why etc etc" is true enough in it's way, but totally unnecessary.

The fact is that humans are not monkeys in any way, we are still apes, in the same way that dogs are still canines, and leopards are still felines.

There is no such thing as an 'evolutionist' The word was created by Theists to make it simpler for them to lump differing groups of people together.

They cannot function out of their own comfort zone which is the group/sheep mentality, so they have to project that mindset onto everyone else.

Hmmm, possible troll in disguise or what? Usually Orion would not word things quite like this... anyway; Monkeys evolved from monkeys, apes from apes, and humans from humans, as in cro-magnon, etc... hence the reason why there are still monkeys, apes and humans.

My science classes were at a Baptist school.

I'm sorry but on every test Jesus and God were the main subject.

Thank you for telling me this :)

Don't you love science and religion. The thing about the theory of evolution is it is a theory. The same thing with intelligent design. Neither one has been proven or disproven.

Stop your masquerade....you aren't fooling anyone now, you won't later on, either.

Psalm 14:1
The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.
