Yeah, it's rude. The cashier was correct to respond in kind. My opinion is that we (places of business) should all adopt the use of little cash trays with raised textured surfaces, like they use in Japan. It removes any ambiguity of how to make the transaction and takes out the human contact component.

LOL I have worked retail most of my adult life. That is one of my big pet peeves second only to customers licking their fingers and touching their money. I always hand the customer their money back in their hands. However most give it to me on the counter. Do u know how hard pennies are to get up off the counter. Most stores I go in put my money on the counter also. I think its unprofessional for the cashier to do that to the lady just because the lady was rude. However I am a hypocrite because I have done the same thing. Its really irritating for the cashier when her hand is out and they bypass it to put the money on the counter

Oh, shoot....I think I do that sometimes when I'm counting out bills and think it's easier for the cashier to see what's there if I place them down and slide them toward her. Although in writing that, I see it's silly because they have to count them anyway. Hopefully I'm not thought of as rude..I know a lot of times cashiers slide the money to me, and I always figured they were trained to do it so the customer could see they were getting the correct change before they pocketed it (like they do in Vegas for the eye in the sky). I'll admit, I *hate* when they do that with coins or credit cards, because they're hard to pick up with fingernails.

Your supposed to do unto others as they want you to do unto them. That may be different from the way you would want to be treated and if that's so, you should accommodate them. To me, if I put out my hand to get my change and the cashier puts the money on the counter, he or she is saying that I am dirty and he or she doesn't want to touch me. That is rude. I wouldn't curse out the cashier though. That is rude also. There are far greater crimes in the world than putting change on the counter. I think they both need a life.

I've always thought it rude to do that. I worked as an associate (fancy name for cashier) my first year in college and people did it all the time. I wasn't a servant...I was a cashier (I mean Associate). And...I was a very polite cashier in an upscale department store.
My suggestion is just to take it in stride. You get paid to be polite. Also, some people were just raised in a barn...shame on them!

I worked in a convenience store for 2 years and i did the exact same thing this cashier did! It is very rude not to hand the person your money, especially if their hand is there! It's especially rude if it's coins and it lands everywhere.

in high school i used to work in retail and it was THE most annoying thing ever when people put their money on the counter. its rude and implies that youre not good enough to have something handed to you. also, the cashier then has to pick it all up off of the counter which not only takes time, but think about it: would you actually hand your mother something or toss it on the floor and expect her to pick it up.

I think it's rude if the person has their hand out already, and you just slam the money on the counter. I mean, use discretion. If the person's hand is covered in scabs and boils or something, you probably don't want to touch their hand. Otherwise, just put it in their hand. Who wants to have to sit there struggling to drag coins off of the counter?

I totally agree with what the cashier did. That was rude of the customer to put the money or for of payment on the counter.
Good for her for standing up and saying something !

I fold my bills in half and then stand them up to make it easy for the cashier to pick up, but I do put coins directly in their hand...and I try to give them exactly the correct amount, if at all possible.
I don't hold out my hand waiting for change; I wait until the bills are counted and then accept them, but I do open my hand for coins.
