It depends on the type of can. There can also be various amounts of residue in cans...

3 types of 12 ounce soft drink cans:
5 of one type 65g
7 of another type 93g
5 of another type 68g

The first was 65/5=13 grams per can
one pound = 454 grams so it would be 454/13=35 cans per pound

The second was 93/7=13.3 grams per can
so 454/13.3 = 34 cans per pound

The third was 68/5=13.6 grams per can
so 454/13.6 = 33.3 cans per pound

.... the average of the results above is about 34 cans per pound. I have seen some cans that are much heavier than this.

The last time i weighed up a pound of aluminum cans, it took 24 or 25 cans.

"As of January 1st, 2007 California Redemption Value (CRV) is $1.60 per pound and there are approximately 31.3 aluminum cans to one pound."

This price is about 6 time the actual salvage value of aluminum cans at salvage yards in other States.

One site says 19 24-ounce cans per pound. In California, you must be paid $1.90 if you specify being paid by count; or for 12-ounce aluminum cans at maybe 32 to the pound, you might get $1.60. The mid-2015 price required of recycle centers by the state for CRV-only loads paid by weight was $1.58, assumed to be 28.8 cans. Since the 5-cent CRV is for everything under 24 ounces, and 10-cent for all larger, you can figure whether to sell by weight or by count depending on the can sizes you have.

I live in South Texas and the rate here is 80 cents per pound. We recycle our own soda cans and it is amazing how many pounds of aluminum we collect every month!!!

Not all aluminum cans weigh the same.
I found that out several years ago.
You may have already noticed that. Some are manufactured with thicker gage aluminum stock than others, and not all are the same height or diameter.

When I worked at a recycling plant 30 years ago, it was 24-25 12-oz. cans to a pound.

Manufacturing techniques have imporved over the past 30 years, so now they are thinner and just as strong. Now, it is about 32 cans (12-oz.) to a pound.

Depends on your local area, and it depends on the market at the time as well. Call your local areas and get prices to see what the going rates are. Like one other person suggested, it may be wise to collect these by walking if possible, and eliminate the gas part of it. Good luck, and thanks for doing your part to save the planet.

12 oz can weighed on digital scale : .035lb = 28.5 cans per lb.
16oz cans, believe it or not weigh exactly the same, .035lb. 20oz Red Bull .045lb-22.2 /lb. 23oz Arizona cans, .050-20 cans/lb.
24oz -.055lb or 18.18/lb. 8oz cans including Vienna Sausage cans weigh .025lb or 40 cans/lb. I have weighed many samples of different brands and these are the results.
