Many of you are going to read this and call me stupid but here it is. My ex boy friend thought that I was cheating on him (which he came to find out later that I didn't) that was after he came to my house destroyed over 5 thousand dollars worth of things. Including my 50 inch big screen. Then proceeded to slap me. I filed a police report but didn't follow up on it, because like some people ( people I use to call stupid) I blamed myself. I no longer feel that way, I think he should have to pay financially and criminally for what he did. Since its been so long do you think I could get compensation for the damages? I have a witness who saw him hit me and break all those things. I just dont know if its too late.

How long ago did this happen?
Provinces/states have time limits on how long you have to sue for damages to property.
As for the criminal end, in Canada he would have been charged with or without your cooperation once the incident had been reported. There is no statute of limitations for mischief over $5000 or assault in Canada, so if you live here you could still go to the police. If LOTS of time has gone by, proving it happened will be difficult. Do you have photos?
If you are really serious about proceeding, then you need to do a little research on the time limits for civil proceedings and then contact the police and see what your options are criminally.

You don't say how long ago, but there is a statue of limitation. It is less for criminal then for civil, so I suggest you try to reopen your case with the police a.s.a.p. & also get a lawyer or take him to small claims court. If you can't get a criminal case go civil. Make the succer pay.

well, it would depend on where you live and how long it actually has been.
i would follow up with the officer that took the police report and tell them that you would like to press charges for assault and vandalism.
then, if he loses that will help in a civil suit to get your money to replace your things.
get a lawyer even if you can't file criminal charges, you may still be able to file civil suit for damages.

You never even mentioned how long ago it was. You can take him to civil court to pay for the damages and he can get a assault and battery ticket for hitting you depending on how long ago that was.
But that's just in my city other cities have other rules.

I think you would have to find out the statue of limitations (time line) for where you live to see if you can still file. That would be the first step there.
Good job on standing up for yourself! It is hard!
Good luck!!!

Check your state for the statute of limitations on the civil tort of assault and battery, etc. I bet if it's less than 2 yrs ago, you can still sue.
