My mother has been a fundy since I was a teen and firmly believes disorders like schizophrenia and most other mental problems are just that the person has a demon. For instance, when I was a teen, I couldn't take it (her) anymore and tried to kill myself due to depression and instead of acknowledging the problem, she just tried to cast demons out of me, but nothing happened. I didn't even foam at the mouth, spin my head around, or speak in a scary devil voice or anything. Today I am a very happy, successful Agnostic even though I don't think my demon came out.

One of the greatest weapons a delusional person has is to honestly believe that everyone else is delusional and anyone with a problem outside the norm most meet their own criteria of whatever suits their own delusion.

Since the dawn of Christianity mentally disturbed people have always been accused of being possessed or led by the devil. Its disturbing to think that mentality still exists. Personally i don't think mental sickness are all legit. For example when i was a teenager i was diagnosed with depression and was thrown on a flurry of medications which only made me sicker then i already was. I flushed the pills and began to meditate and mountain bike. i haven't felt an ounce of depression since. A lot of "mental illnesses" are just a way of saying you don't fit into the mainstream or your too fun loving or its not OK to be sad here's some Prozac to mask your sadness just be careful you may want to commit suicide even more on this medication. Disgusting!

IGNORANCE!!! As U may be aware, there are many "Mental Disorders" out there such as Schizophrenia, Bi-Polar etc. that are CERTAINLY NOT DEMON POSSESSION!!! For Ur mother to accept that U have for example Either Schiz. or B.P. would to have to admit that Either She or Ur Dad (whom She married) passed it on to U as it IS GENETIC!!! Big GUILT Problem there!!! I have a Friend who has B.P. & is HATED by her PARENTS because she has B.P.!!! At 17, she too attempted ending it & was hospitalized. At that time the testing & Family History (Grandfather Schiz.) revealed she was B.P.. As she was just under 18 her Dr. was Ordered not to disclose to her the condition she had, nor prescribe Meds for it by her Parents!!! She until 8 years ago, (now 46) has been Stumbling through Life doing things she can't control. The B.P. Personality, Physically, has Frontal Lobes that are larger than normal, exhibiting Tremendous Intellect but the rest of the Body can't always make enough necessary "Chemicals" to maintain "Stability" causing "Swings" from "Highs to Lows", hence "Bi-Polar" / Manic (High) / Depressive (Low). My Friend is Now on Meds that allow her Body to make enough "Chemicals" to function normally and is living a Full Life!!! Un-fortunately, her Daughter (19) is refusing to take Meds & is "Hell on Wheels" so to speak as she "Enjoys" the "Manic" episodes' "Power Rush" and is bound to destroy her Life as her Mother did for so many years. Her Parents(???) were (like Ur Mom) "Stigmatized" and afraid that their Daughters "problem" would affect their "Lifestyle / Status" as her father(???) was The Engineer who crated the "Patriot Missile System" for the Govt.. Kinda "Speaks Volumes" about getting Ur "Priorities Straight" doesn't it!!! So, I DO KNOW of what U speak & am so Happy for U!!! Only One thing could make Ur story any better!!! For U to Accept Christ, because U know He WILL ACCEPT U, AS U ARE!!! U know God didn't make ANY MISTAKES, Not U or my Friend, who has found the Greatest Friend in Christ. When all had Abandoned her, Christ was still right there for her. Think about it, We should really like to welcome U into the "Family". John

I am a Christian and I have had Trichotillomania for 10 years. It doesn't mean I'm demon possessed or that God doesn't love me. And it's not because I have sinned or I am being punished. But I guess there are Christians out there who would think that but they are probably the minority.

Demon's do not cause every disorder, most of the time it is purely a physical problem. Yes their is a spiritual realm but not all problems are caused by it, we live in a physical realm as well. The way I look at it good and bad things come from three catagories God-Good, People/our physical bodies-Good and evil, Satan-Evil.

Some do, some don't. Possession is real, mental disorders are real. So...it could be either. One does not necessarily trump the other.
The Exorcist for the Vatican, Father Amorth, says that we should see psychiatrists for mental disorders...many times that it all it is. He has had psychiatrists send people to him for exorcism too...because it isn't a mental disorder they suffer from.
The real problem is your mother trying to diagnose the problem when she is neither a psychiatrist or an exorcist. She should have taken you to a professional and started there.

I'm a fundamental baptist and I believe in mental health. At one time I was thinking about going into the mental health field, but two years ago I was down and I was diagnosed as major depression (schizoaffective disorder at first)... I worked with my Doctors and worked with other specialist and they have helped me plenty... I also cannot forget how much the Lord has helped and blessed me since then. Its been so wonderful and it allowed me to talk to others about God while I was in the hospital. The lord works in mysterious ways I tell ya. =)
God Bless

sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. sometimes mental issues are nutritionally based. but your mom is puritanical. that is when they do not know what it is, it then becomes thah debal!!!!!!!dah deballl I say!!!!! But remember that your mom is your mom, and while she may not have all the answers she loves you more than most, and that includes your agnostic friends. the reason she does? JESUS CHRIST. I guarantee that while she may be praying for you, on her knees daily, to be delivered from your demons, she is praying for your salvation as well, and to THE ONLY ONE that can save you from everything. So please remember that we all are agnostic sometimes, but JESUS died for us while we were yet agnostics. and you should give your mom a call and tell her thank you for praying for you every day. and tell keep it up, it is working.. and u say no it isn't.. well why are we talking about it here?

Not everyone believes that way. I believe there are mental problems which are based on hormone inbalances and other physical conditions. There can also be cases of demon possession. They are two different things.

i think it comes from stuff in the bible from people casting out demons in people, largely because they did not understand the idea of 'chemical imbalances'. i went to a church a few years ago where bipolar and manically depressed people who took drugs were perceived as people who just didn't have enough faith in God to deal with their illness. it makes it doubly worse when these people wind up seeing a christian therapist who practices the 'just believe' principle to cure all ailments. it's just brutal
