i recently tried to join the coast guard reserve. rejected cause I have a tattoo (tribal design) that is visible in Tshirt.
So you can protect your country, unless you have a tattoo?

definately not a big deal to me. I got the tattoo when I was really much younger, so it's not about following regulations. i just find it to be a very stupid rule that's all and was interested in other's comments.

Military wide is cracking down on the tattoo. Now you must get permission from your CO and they must approve the tattoo and location. A lot of service members were getting a tattoo below the sleeve line, neck and other locations visible in uniform. A lot of country's find the tattoo offensive so the military is trying to not offend anyone. Is it right? HELL NO!!! I was in the Marine Corps for 6yrs and have 6 tats. I feel if another country wants our help then don't worry about the tats.
Semper Fi!!!

the coast gurad is probably the pickiest when it comes to tattoo's - although i don't 100% agree with it. It is a shame however that they turned you away because of it. With what is going on in this world these days - they should count it as a blessing that anyone would want to join the military - any branch. My son wanted to join the coast guard also - he was never what you would call a good test taker - but he is not dumb by any means - just was never any good at taking a test - especially a timed one. and didn't score high enough on the ASVAB to get in....
Sorry you coulndn't get in... but bless you for at least trying

Navy- as long as it has nothing to do with obscenity or drugs.. Coast Guard- has to be able to be covered up by a t shirt.. no tattoos on you face, head, hand or neck..hope this helps.. i tired enlisting in the coast guard and i have a small tattoo small than a dime on the side of my hand and i wasn't allowed.. choose your tattoos wisely as they may affect your future UNFORTUNATELY

lol thats nothing, Went to sign up as a pilot in the RAF after doing 2 weeks work experience on a squadron. Great I thought, but oh no, I wear glasses.
Now, bearing in mind iv have just come off a frontline fast jet squadron where 2 thirds of the aircrew wear glasses, the snotty corporal told me in no uncertain terms to piss off and stop wasting his time. Apparently the rules say that if you need glasses after signing up then its ok. So as soon as you walk out of the recuiting office, you could go into an opticians and its perfectly acceptable to them if you then need glasses.
Also I took hayfever medication, one summer I got it on prescrption from the doctors just to save money rather than buying it from the supermarket - 3 doctors say its exactly the same stuff, differnet colour box. Anyway walked into the recuiting office, different corporal says no, sorry, you have had prescription medication in the last 4 YEARS, even though its the same stuff out of the supermarket. piss off.
lol, i walked out of his room and the RN lieutenant and a captain in the british army both walked over to me and begged me to sign up. The guys on the squadron I was on pissed themselves when they heard, and promptly wished me luck and it was the RAF's loss.

it's all about presenting a professional image while in uniform. Just like some companies have dress codes, so does the military have restrictions on visible tattoos.

Basically yes. If visible. Many people still find tattoos to be bad. You can't see mine but I can't serve either.

After missing their recruiting goals again, I'm sure the army would be willing to allow you to enlist.
In fact, I bet they would be so overjoyed, that you would get an all-expenses paid trip to Iraq for 1.5 years.

Part of protecting our country is following regulations.
If your tat can be seen outside of a normal shirt, you can't pass those regs.
BTW...I don't agree with it either.

Today it seams like all young people are deforming their bodies. Maybe you can wait a couple of years and they will be looking for anybody to join! I wonder what all these people are going to look like when they get to be 60???
