Why is your mother trying to force them on you? I can understand you not wanting to drink them and your conflicting desire to respect your mom. What I don't understand is why your mother would push such an issue.

Does she think some great harm will come to you without Crystal Light?

Well.... this is a hard question. I am Mormon as well, but my mother is too, I grew up in the church. I drink caffeine in sodas, although lately she's been making a point to buy caffeine free sodas. Anyways, you've probably been told this already but I would explain to her about your beliefs. Tell her caffeine is very addicting and when you try to break the addiction you get major headaches, and it's just not good for you. I would stick to drinking water and gatorade, but that's just me. Take the matter to God and whatever you feel inspired to do, do it. That's the best advice I can give you about this matter!

You can not serve two masters, you have to pick one or the other. Adam and Eve also had to choose the lesser of the evils, or greater of the goods.

Is it better to live by your standards or obey your mother? If you can do both than great! however, if she was leading you off a cliff would you still follow her? If she is leading you away from your religious convictions, than she is leading you off a cliff.

If it were something serious that truly goes against your religion such as watching R rated movies, viewing porno, cussing etc. than your mother wouldn't be worth obeying, she would be leading you off a cliff.

But since it's not against church standards, just give in and drink it.

But if I were you, I would sit down with your mom and tell her how important it is for you to live by your churches standards, explain to her what you feel comfortable with.

If your mom is making such a big deal over not wanting to drink caffeine, than that's silly on her part. I mean, what parent would get mad over there daughter not wanting to drink caffeine? especially if the reason is tied to religious affiliations.

Go on a health food kick.

Most foods that contain caffeine are really bad for you anyway, with the exception of tea. You really shouldn't be drinking soda no matter what your religion (or lack of religion) is.

Never do something for purely religious reasons, but keep in mind that the Mormons *almost* have a point on this one.

I never drink soda anymore, thought I admit I do take caffeine pills once in a while if I have to work late.

actually the word of wisdom says don't drink hot drinks.
Caffeine wasn't known to be coffee, tea or even soda drinks.
Bruce R. McConkie was said to have brought a can of coke to a fireside over 20 years ago to explain it was okay to drink caffeinated soda. Personally I see nothing wrong drinking Crystal Light...I never drank it myself, but the choice is yours.
Drinking it would be against the spirit of the word of wisdom, but not against the letter of the law as it was written.

I don't understand why any mother would try to be forcing caffeine not to mention artificial sweeteners on their child. Your mother should count herself blessed that that is the biggest problem she has with you and just let go of it. If you are an adult then your mother needs to respect your wishes. If she is not a Mormon but a Christian then she needs to let you find your relationship with God on your own. Forcing never does anything but push people away .

Respect your mother tell her, "Thank you for your gift and caring about me". Tell her that you do not want to drink caffeine and to please keep them or give them to someone who does. You must decide what you want for your own life now that you are an adult.

Sorry I just read that you are only 16. You must not always decide what you want for your own life, obey your mom. but my advise concerning the drink still stands.

I will end this by saying that not eating or not drinking, is legalism. Jesus came to free us from legalism. There is freedom in Christ. However if you are doing it to honor Him then, it is good. Please read the book of Romans.

Well, the mormon church in my town never drank caffine either (used to go there because it was the ONLY church - wasn't a mormon, but its better than nothing)

They did their best to avoid coffee. It was ALWAYS hot chocolate.

Until, of course, they read the ingredients label on the hot chocolate powder; lo and behold, the hot chocolate contained CAFFINE.

Nothing particularly wrong with caffine...

...Its just those crazy people who drink like eight cokes a day...

And my law teacher, hes ADD and every morning he makes a BIG pot of coffee, and by fourth period, hes whacko.

He threw a rockpick at the chalkboard once...

And he beat his chair to give an example of "bludgeoning"

And he yelled at me once...

lol

perhaps she doesnt realize that her insisting is actually violating your conscience. which is a matter that supercedes the obeying parents requirement.. there is a time when parents must let their children grow up by allowing them to have personal preferences

if she is a christian then show her the scripture the apostle Paul wrote that talks about personal preferences some believers have not to eat meat sacrificed to idols while others allow themselves to eat what they like

the topic is different but the principle is the same in that you prefer not to drink caffeinated drinks while she sees nothing wrong with it

okay, well, it says in the bible something to do with us being set free from eating regulations etc, and everything is made clean or something like that - and that we should not get stressed out about what other people choose to eat and stuff. so god not gonna be uber cross if you drink the drink. so maybe you could drink it to keep your mum happy, but then if you make a point of not buying it for yourself and stuff??
i dont really know if that helps.
but i hope it all gets sorted!
:)
