The basic reason behind the policy is manpower.

The pool of people who can be considered likely to join the military are people who tend not to want to live in close contact with homosexuals. Thus allowing homosexuals to serve openly would be a great dis-incentive to the military most important recruiting pool. The people who tend to support the idea of open homosexuals in the military tend to be people who are not likely to join the military.

The military fears a manpower hemorrhage if open homosexuals were allowed to serve.

The US military has a long tradition of banning homosexuals from their ranks. During the Clinton administration the president tried to do away with this ban. Some pretty interesting stories surfaced at this time like officers who had served 20 years getting thrown out for having been gay all that time. The military compromised with the president with the "don't ask don't tell" rule. A laughable protocol that basically means, no one in the military will ever ask a person if they are gay but no one in the military who is gay can tell if they are. So basically the only way you can be thrown out of the military now is if you "come out." Why don't they want gay people they say? Well they say it interferes with morale. The guys who make the rules say it is bad for morale and that is the end of the story. there are no facts to back this up you know. But that's the way it is.

Homosexuals can serve as long as they are not openly gay. What they do on their own time is their business. The concern is morale. Homosexuality is not fully accepted in our society yet. Until it is, policies like this will be necessary to avoid conflicts in the ranks. Some people have deep seated issues with homosexuality and couldn't operate as a military unit if they knew there were gays in the unit. Until that is alleviated, the easiest solution is secrecy. If nobody knows a person is gay, nobody will have issues about it. Personally, I have no problem working with a homosexual (as long as they are not flamboyantly gay). I have no doubt I work with a few as it is. I just don't know who they are.

ok im a armed forces spouse. and function talked to my husband approximately this. and that's the top ive come to.... so i think of absolutely everyone could have the skill to combat for their u . s . in the event that they so choose for, extra human beings interior the army means much less generic deployments that's one ingredient i'm alllllll for... and additionally you would be shocked there are gays interior the armed forces yet they don't seem to be "out" and that i in many cases pay attention extra approximately lesbians for some reason. who's nicely-known with of why. oh nicely. (additionally i see lesbians extra, like i surely observed a lesbian couple final time i went to the ER) yet on the comparable time assorted the adult males interior the army are good previous boys, large christian, from the south, and so on you get the assumption, and as maximum are homophobic. so having open gays interior the army ought to reason assorted hazing and abuse... and doubtless it ought to bypass farther than that. additionally in the event that they have been to try this i think like the completed bathe ingredient could could substitute because of the fact we could be extreme what right now guy needs a gay guy finding out their junk. and however the gay adult males could be like "yo, im merely attempting to bathe, i dont like furry neanderthals such as you, sorry".... additionally the completed barracks ingredient must be wicked awkward. for each individual. think of a damaging little 18 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous christian virgin from farm city MN who had in no way met a gay in his existence (til his room mate) walking in on his gay room mate having intercourse with yet another guy. oh the comedy that ought to take place. yet incredibly, the completed barracks ingredient would make some uncomfortable yet they could make provisions like "verify right here in case you're uncomfortable sharing a room with some one that is gay" "verify right here once you're a gay" and then it may be basic to avert that kind of awkwardness.

Because it is the Law of the Land.

Specifically, it is contained in Public Law 103-160, also known as Title 10 U.S. Code, section 654.

In other words, the Military is legally bound and obligated to implement and follow the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.

And homosexuals CAN serve, and serve legally, in the U.S. Armed Forces. They must keep their lifestyle to themselves (no open statements or practices) while they are in the Armed Forces.

In reality...It's for their own safety.
The military in general, not just the Army, is full of macho men. Macho men have a hard time accepting gays. So, as a result, they won't have that close buddy bond. If you don't have that bond in the field, someone (or many someones) gets killed.

It's a macho world. The policy is "don't ask, don't tell". Maybe a person is gay, but does not advertise the fact. Hey, it's a cruel world out there.

It's just homophobia. My father saw action in the air force and had his life saved and the lives of some his fellow pilots saved by guys in his unit who later turned out to be gay. Do you think he cared what their gender preference was when they pulled his fat outta the fire? Not really. In his words;

"I don't care if they're gay, straight, transsexual, transvestites or f*cking transformers. If they're good soldiers I'll go into combat with them anytime and any god-damned place. "

You've never been in the military, either. SO, give it a rest, white boy.

"Don't ask, don't tell." has been a policy in the U.S. military for decades.
