NEVER NEVER NEVER buy from a pet store, or a website that ships puppies

The classifieds are bad news too

They all sell PUPPY MILL puppies that come from places like this http://www.prisonersofgreed.org...

But those websites and pet stores always lie about that

Instead you need a referral

Find a BREED RESCUE GROUP

go here http://www.petfinder.com and find some, even if they aren't in your state. Contact them for referral and advice.

It seems that people know this. WHY DO THEY CONTINUE TO BUY FROM PET STORES? I can't figure it out. Over and over again, there are media reports of sick, diseased defective puppies from pet stores and these websites that ship them. How can people still buy? and spend so much to get cheated?

Pet stores are in the business of making a profit. You should consider a shelter puppy or a real certified breeder. A pet should be considered an investment as well as a living breathing part of the family. Knowing that, you should want to make certain that you are not acquiring a misfit, a mis-bred dog that has disease, or bad traits. Breeders know the parents, the parents' parents etc. You have a better chance in getting a long-life friend in a bred pet versus a store pet. Whow knows where those dogs come from? Plus they are really expensive in the store.

I own a Miniature Schnauzer rescue and get some many dogs where on the paperwork the box for "Boughten from Pet Store" is checked! I never understand.

I guess it is because they want to buy that "cute little puppy in the window." Either because it is SO cute or they want to save it.
I constantly try to talk people out of Pet Store and inform them out Puppymills. We adopted a Puppymill girl that was rescued when they busted the mill from our own rescue. She is mentally slow for a Miniature Schnauzer and doesn't learn as quickly as most Minis. Poor thing! She has two HUGE (non-cancerous) mammorary tumors from overbreeding. She is a wonderful little White Miniature Schnauzer though, very funny and entertaining. :)

YES! I agree that classifieds are bad. I always recommend to NEVER buy from the paper. Almost all of them are backyard breeders. Who cares if they are breed purebred dogs! That doesn't mean they know how to breed them correctly. BYB usually sell through papers and only breed for money.
All of the quality, AKC breeders I know say they would never place ads in the paper. They have a website and are listed on AKC.org. Most rescues have "Quality Breeder Lists" and that is enough for them.

Thank you for trying to inform people about this! We finally got a Pet Store closed in a near-by town that sold puppies.

The pet shop sale them with no problem and don't ask to mush questions. Some people are smart buyers. After they buy the pet from a pet store. They go to a vet and have them given shots and tested to make sure the pet is fine. If they fine something wrong with the pet. They could have the pet shop reported. And even sue them. But almost all pet shop knows this. I got two cats and two dogs from the pet store. And they are A okay. As longs you have a vet doctor and you know how too take care of them it will be fine. Lots of people don't even take care of them. Why you think animals are homeless.

Unfortunately so many people don't really listen to what is going on around them. The puppies look cute in the store and the shops parade them in front of the buyers. I don't know that all pet stores are bad but for myself, I love a good mutt and support pet shelters. I wouldn't buy from a pet store.

The reason pet stores still sell pets is because people don't spay their animals, they have litters, they get rid of them quickly by selling them cheaply to a pet shop, and people walk past and see these adorable creatures in the window. That's how I got my first few cats, I saw them in the window, full of fleas and ear canker and bought them to rescue them and give them a better life. I also bought a couple of pedigree dogs that way which were in bad condition, solely so I could get the pedigree, have the names of breeders and get them shut down as being unlicensed puppy farms.

Some people still don't "get it". Not to make fun of anyone but I knew a girl and her mother was going to order her a graduation ring .I had gotten my sons ring at Wal-Mart or K-Mart one and I mentioned this to her so her mom could save some money. The rings are exactly like the ones you order at school. She tells me "no thanks- mom isn't getting me a generic class ring. I guess along the same line, people think you are getting a better dog (and in her case a better ring). The best plase to get a pup or a dog is at the animal shelter. These animals realize you have given them a special chance and really show their love and appreciation. We just have to keep spreading the word. If enough people refuse to buy "puppy farm" pets, they will eventually go out of business.

You lumped in all petstores into this and that's unfair. PetsMart hosts pets that have been rescued. All 3 of my animals are rescues.I don't buy into the idea of buying cute little 6 wk old baby animals for 250.00 but I will go to PetsMart and bring home sweet loving animals that deserve a home, and I will pay the adoption fee to cover all the necessary expenses to innoculate and spay, deworm, etc.

People simply just don't know. You think that a lot of people know, but there are a lot of people out there that don't know. I only recently learned about puppy mills. They don't do it knowingly. In fact, I doubt they even think about where those dogs in the pet store come from.

What kind of a question is this?

People that breed dogs and put them in the newspaper are not all bad! It is better to buy pure bred pups from a local breeder than to get them in a pet store or have them sent to you.

I got a very healthy, beautiful, smart, great dog from a pet shop. In fact we sold our puppies to that same pet shop. We had healthy, happy pups. Sometimes pet shops are not that bad, just depends.
