George Lucas never said anything about Star Wars being religious or having anything to do with Christianity. He has stated a 1958 Japanese film The Hidden Fortress, by Akira Kurosawa, were a major inspiration. Lucas was also influenced by the writing of Joseph Campbell. Lucas has also suggested that that force is more like "chi" the all-pervading vital energy of the universe.

Hold on now. My first memory is of the first Star Wars movie. I know the truth; I live the truth. Also, my favorite character in any movie is Darth Vader. I always wanted that death grip power! The dark side is so much more fun. May you use the force for your own ends! (That weak "May the force be with you" is a Jedi's form of cowardice, since they are afraid to embrace the pure power of the force!).
